Kelpin, Fred (1885 - NOV 1903)
Fred Kelpin, eighteen years of age, living near Spokeville, went out into the woods with a companion to cut a tree. He stepped in the way of his friend’s ax, which cut a deep gash on the inside of the thigh, three inches long, opening the large arteries. Says the Marshfield News:
"Fruitless attempts were made to staunch the flow of blood and as soon as possible the unfortunate young man was taken to Loyal (Clark Co., Wis.), where medical assistance could be given him. He suffered much from the loss of blood, and after the wound was dressed the patient was taken to the home of his parents. Later a discoloration of the leg was noticeable, indicating the presence of gangrene, which spread rapidly. A consultation of physicians was held and steps were immediately taken to amputate the limb as a last resort to save the young man’s life. The leg was cut off, but to no avail, and death claimed its own at about six o’clock the same evening. The funeral services were held from the Lutheran Church in Granton Thursday."
