Jahr, Oscar F. (23 July 1876 - 4 October 1946)

Oscar F. Jahr, 70, pioneer resident of Granton, passed on at his home in Fremont Township Friday evening, October 4, (1946), after a three week’s illness. Christian Science services were held Monday at 2 p.m. at the Gilbertson Funeral Home, with interment in the Windfall Cemetery.

Mr. Jahr was born July 23, 1876, on the farm of his parents, Mr. and Mrs. Bernard Jahr, in the Town of Grant. In his boyhood he attended the district school in Grant Township. Later he worked on farms by the month and in the woods in the winter. He also learned the mason and carpenter trades and helped in the construction of many homes and other buildings in the community.

In 1889 he purchased an 80-acre tract of land in Section 25, Town of York. The land when he moved onto it was wild, and it was necessary to cut a trail to his building site. He had one which had been thrown in as a part of the bargain when he bought the land, and with this small beginning, he built up one of the most picturesque and best improved farms of the area.

On May 4, 1904, he was united in marriage with Mary Schaeffner of Loyal, daughter of Edward and Paulina (Zipfel) Schaeffner.

In 1934 Mr. and Mrs. Jahr retired from active farming and built a new home adjacent to the home farm. He lived there until his death. During these late years Mr. Jahr continued to have an intense interest in the place he had developed. He loved the beauties of nature and growing things and was always devoted to his family, community and mankind.

He leaves his wife, three children, Ernest, Deerfield; Esther (Mrs. Halvor Eide), and Wesley, who is now operating the home farm; four brothers Frank, Edwin, Wesley and Albert; one sister, Mrs. Clara Reichert, two granddaughters, Ellen Eide and Marian Jahr, and many nieces and nephews. A sister, Mrs. Lena Steuerwald, preceded him in death three years ago.

Pallbearers were Lester Todd, Henry Elmhorst, Fred Sternitzky, Grant Johnson, Clayton Converse and William Scharf.
