Lawrence and Martha Schmidt, Colby, announce the engagement of their daughter,
Jeri, to William J. Schmidt, son of Theodore and Cecelia Schmidt, Route 1,
Abbotsford.
Jeri is a 1975 graduate of Colby High School and is employed at Weinbrenner Shoe
Company, Marshfield. Her fiancé is a 1974 graduate of Colby and is an employee
of Liberty Homes Inc., Dorchester.
A spring wedding is being planned.

Kowalk, Mr./Mrs. George (Gold – 4 Nov 1977)
Mr. and Mrs. George Kowalk, Colby, celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary
Sunday, October 2, 1977 at the VFW Clubhouse, Colby. The couple was married
November 4, 1927 at Zion Lutheran Church, Colby.
Kowalk was born in the Town of Colby, the son of William and Ernestine Kowalk.
His wife, the former Gertrude Quist, was born in Alamena, Wisconsin, December
29, 1903, the daughter of Charles and Christine Quist.
He served in the First Division on a company ammunition train before working at
Continental Motors, Detroit. After two years in Michigan, they moved to a farm
near Colby, where they lived until 1951, when they moved into the town. He
worked at Rollo Home until he retired in 1951.
The Kowalks are affiliated with the Zion Lutheran Church and he has served on
the school board for Little Grove School.
Attending the celebration were two of her sisters, Mrs. Mabel Kowalk and Mrs.
Gladys Baumgart. Otto Kowalk and Herbert Schwocho were present at the wedding.
Also attending was their daughter, Mrs. Richard Beguen, Elk Mound.

The Abbotsford Falcons girls’ volleyball team was presented with the conference
championship trophy Thursday night after defeating Stratford. Members of the

Poucke (Coach), Beth Nikolay, Venzke, Conrad, Broeske, Marcott, Nelson, Barb
Stevens (Coach).

The highest award in scouting, the eagle award, was presented to Dan Bartnik,
Colby, son of Mr. and Mrs. Lawrence Bartnik, Sunday afternoon.
Dan, 16, is a junior at Colby High School. The charge of eagle was given by Dr.
Raymond Hansen, Marshfield, and a former Colby resident, at a ceremony held at
St. Mary’s School Auditorium.
Dan joined Troop 683 in 1972, and is presently serving as senior patrol leader
of that troop. He has completed the troop leader development training, and is a
member of the order of the arrow. Dan also spent five weeks this summer as a
staff trainee at Camp Tesomas.
For his eagle project, Dan led his troop in the construction of a game board for
the residents of the Colonial House.
Scoutmaster of Troop 683 is Jerry Zygowicz, and assistant scoutmaster is Dan
Beck. Colby VFW Post 2227 is Troop 683’s sponsoring organization.

The main table was full Thursday afternoon when Green Vista Nutritional Program
celebrated its second anniversary. Attending the celebration were Father Hodnik,
Mayor and Mrs. Steve Bezak, Anton Hennlich, representing the nutrition council,
the 1977 king and queen, Mr. and Mrs. John Neidhold and the 1976 king and queen,
Mr. and Mrs. George Vetter.
