Laack, Arnold H. (2 Mar 1904 – 14 Oct 1977)

Arnold Henry Laack, 73, died at his Abbotsford home Friday morning. Born March 2, 1904 in Dorchester, he was the son of Gustav and Minnie (Dake) Laack. He was a longtime resident of the area. He resided at 215 Butternut Street.

He married his wife Elizabeth Archambo March 21, 1930. He was educated in the Dorchester area school and moved to Abbotsford in 1931. He worked for the White House Milk Company, but spent most of his life employed at Abbotsford Hardware.

Laack was an elder of Christ Lutheran Church, a former member of the village board and former secretary of A.A.L.

Besides his wife, Laack leaves two sons, Dennis, Abbotsford, and Harlen, Mundelyn, Illinois, and one daughter, Mrs. Robert (Jean) Ebert, Wausau.

Laack was preceded in death by one brother and two sisters, but four of his sisters remain. They are: Mrs. Rose Hoffman, Wisconsin Rapids, Mrs. Edna Tennis, Mrs. Harry (Leona) Mandel, and Mrs. Elva Herbert, all of Unity

Pallbearers were John Bremer, Dalton Fleege, Roland Roth, George Hansen, Ed Kramer and Alvin Uhlig.

Calley, Terra Lynn (8 Oct 1977)

Autumn leaves and fall flowers in candlelight was the setting at United Methodist Church, Colby, as Terra Lynn Calley, Colby, became the bride of Douglas Bernard Newman, Unity, on Saturday, October 8, 1977.

Performing the 8 p.m. ceremony was the bride’s grandfather, the Rev. Carol Gilbert of Decatur, Nebraska, and the Rev. Keith Schroerlucke.

Parents of the couple are Mrs. David Calley, Colby, and Mr. and Mrs. Donald Newman, Unity.

Mrs. David Todd and Ruth Gabriel, soloists, accompanied at the organ and piano by Miss Penny Hinke and Mrs. Robert Gosse, provided the wedding music.

The bride was wearing a white jersey knit floor length gown with Watteau train. The empire styled gown complemented with a Queen Anne neckline was trimmed with Venice lace throughout the bodice and fitted sleeves.

Her veil of sheer illusion trimmed with Venice lace was attached to a Camelot headpiece and she carried a colonial bouquet of American beauty roses, baby’s breath and greenery adorned with white lace streamers. The groom was attired in a white tuxedo.

Attending the bride as maid of honor was Denise Witte, Colby. Bridesmaids were Mrs. Douglas Kops, Marathon, and Dawn Newman, Unity, sister of the bridegroom, and flower girl was the bride’s sister, Kristine Calley.

The bridal attendants wore brown velvet skirts nd boleros with beige blouses of flocked sheer nylon. Each carried a single orange rose with fern and autumn colored streamers. The flower girl wore a dress of the same fabric and carried a basket of yellow daisies and bronze chrysanthemums.

Attired in camel tuxedos with brown velvet accents was the best man, Steve Gaetz, and groomsmen, David Newman, Unity, brother of the bridegroom, and Gilbert Calley, Colby, brother of the bridegroom.

A reception in the church basement followed the ceremony. Floral bouquets in the sanctuary were arranged by Mrs. David Arnold, a friend of the bride.

Both of the newlyweds are 1976 graduates of Colby High School. The bride attended UW-Marshfield last year and was employed at All-Metal Stamping, Abbotsford. The bridegroom graduated in March, after attending a farm and industry short course at the UW-Madison, and is presently engaged in the business of farming.

The couple is making their home on Route 1, Unity.

Calvert, Charles R. (13 Dec 1893 – 13 Oct 1977)

Charles R. Calvert, #4, a former resident of Chicago, recently residing in Colby, died at his home Thursday, October 13, 1977, at 7:30 a.m.

Born in Brazil, Indiana December 13, 1893, Calvert was a WWI veteran and achieved the rank of Sgt. Major before his discharge. Calvert married Tillie Weller October 1, 1938 in Indiana. He worked for Rhopac Gasket Manufacturing as a foreman for many years.

Visitation was Saturday at Rux-Lulloff, with the funeral Sunday, ending with burial in Colby Memorial Cemetery. The Rev. Robin Fink officiated.

Two sons and two daughters survive the Calverts. They are Clayton Calvert, Lombard, Illinois, Chester Calvert, Chicago, Mrs. William (Thelma) Hartsell, Holy Grove Arkansas, and Mrs. Daniel (Wilma) Morella, Chicago. Ten grandchildren and 13 great-grandchildren also survive. Calvert’s two brothers and one sister preceded him in death.

Mr. and Mrs. Wilfred Petznick, Route 1, Athens, announce the engagement of their daughter, Dorean Petznick to Danny Freimund, Milan, son of Mr. and Mrs. Darold R. Freimund, Athens.

Petznick is a 1976 graduate of Athens High School and is employed at Edgar Standard Container Company. Her fiancé is a 1970 graduate of Abbotsford High School. He is employed at Land-O-Lakes, Spencer.

A May 20, 1977 wedding has been set by the couple.

Justman, Roy E. (17 Oct 1892? – 14 Oct 1977)

Services for Roy E. Justman, 85, Unity, were held October 16, 1977 at 3:00 p.m. at Trinity Lutheran Church, Unity. The Rev. Elton Moore officiated.

Mr. Justman died October 14, 1977 at the Colonial House, Colby.

He was born October 17 189? at Therisa, Dodge County. He received his education in Unity Township. On October 29, 1914 he was married to Emma Johnson at Colby. She died December 19, 1970.

He came to Unity with his parents at the age of nine. He and his wife farmed there until they retired and moved to the Village of Unity in 1947. He lived there until entering the Colonial House earlier this year.

Mr. Justman served on the Maplewood School Board, the church board and the Trinity Lutheran choir. He was also sexton of the church for a number of years.

He is survived by one son, Merlin, Unity, four grandchildren, five great-grandchildren, and one brother, Alfred, Unity. He was preceded in death by two sons.

After a wedding trip to the southern states, Mr. and Mrs. Brian Steinmetz, who were married Friday, October 7, 1977, will be making their home at 915 ½ South 6th Avenue in Wausau.

Sheila Gorke, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Adolph Gorke, Dorchester, and Brian Steinmetz, son of Marvin Steinmetz, Colby, repeated their marriage vows at St. Louis Catholic Church in Dorchester. Father James Schaefer officiated at the 6:30 p.m. ceremony.

Carrying a bouquet of yellow roses and white pompons, the bride appear wearing a white poly sheer gown with Carina bodice and illusion scoop neckline. The full skirt and semi-cathedral train were edged with Venice fleurettes. He matching headpiece secured a lace edge fingertip veil.

Sisters of the bridegroom attended the bride, with Karen Steinmetz as maid of honor, and Kay and Kim, bridesmaids. They wore peasant style knit gowns of striped bronze, yellow, and green, with bolero jackets and bouffant sleeves. Each carried a bouquet of yellow, bronze and peach pompons.

After the ceremony, a reception and dinner were served to 250 guests, followed by a dance at Dorchester Memorial Hall.

Both 1971 graduate of Colby High School, the bridegroom is employed by Wausau Home.

The Colby girls volleyball team won the conference championship last week, finishing the year with an unblemished conference record of 10 – 0.

The family and relatives of Mr. and Mrs. Ed Weideman gathered for a dinner party at their new home east of Abbotsford last Saturday evening in honor of the couples’ 40th wedding anniversary. A special cake and a floral centerpiece decorated the table and the Weideman’s received many gifts.

Present were their children, Mr. and Mrs. Bob (Judy) Tomesh and Kim, River Falls, Mr. and Mrs. Alfred Weideman and Laurie, and Mr. and Mrs. Roger Weideman.

Friends and relatives were at the home of Mr. and Mrs. Wilfred Heindl Friday night to observe the tenth wedding anniversary of the couple. Cards were played for entertainment and lunch was served. Mrs. Robert Gonnering made and decorated the anniversary cake.
