Anderson, Charles E. (? - 11 September 1984)
Charles E. Anderson, 76, former owner-operator of the Neillsville Dairy Bar,
died September 11 in St. Mary’s Hospital, Madison. He had been ill for a few
years with Parkinson’s disease and for the past year with Alzheimer’s disease.
The deceased and Tekla Heidemann were married on September 25, 1928, in Spencer.
They lived all their married life in Wisconsin, except for a brief time when he
managed a chain restaurant in Pennsylvania.
He was engaged in farming and restaurant operation most of his adult life,
having farmed near Thorp before being a partner in a restaurant in Appleton and
again after that until he and his wife purchased and operated a restaurant in
Ellsworth. They later sold that business and moved to Clark County where they
farmed in the Willard area for nine years.
After the Willard stay, they moved to Neillsville where they purchased and
operated the Neillsville Dairy Bar, which was located at the corner of Fifth and
West Streets. Prior to retirement, Anderson worked in the hardware department of
the Farmers Store in Neillsville. During this time, the couple made their home
in the Town of Hewett. In November of 1983, they moved to a house in Madison in
order to be closer to a daughter and family.
Surviving him, besides his wife, is a daughter, Bonnie Bryan, Madison; a sister
Vera Rueden, Milan; and four grandchildren. He was preceded in death by an
infant son, Ronald.
The Crest Funeral Home of Madison made final arrangements.

Austin, Merle D. (23 August 1910 – 25 September 1984)
Merle D. Austin, 74, a resident of the Town of Washburn for the past 20 years,
died Tuesday afternoon, September 25, in Neillsville Memorial Hospital.
The deceased was born on August 23, 1910, in Broadhead to Elmer and Sarah
(Hamilton) Austin. He received his early education in Broadhead schools and then
moved with his parents to the state of Washington where he attended high school.
He worked in orchards and at the Red Mountain mine and then moved to Illinois
where he farmed for 19 years.
On November 8, 1947, he married Ann Dallolio in Rockford, Illinois, ceremonies.
The couple moved to Juda and farmed for seven years prior to coming to the Town
of Washburn in 1965. He retired from farming in 1976.
Surviving him, besides his wife, is a son, David, Marshfield; a daughter, Mrs.
Tom (Mary) Fitzpatrick, La Crosse; two sisters, Mrs. Royal (Grace) Pinkerton of
Chilan, Washington, and Mrs. Ted (Ruth) Armstrong of Richland, Washington; four
grandchildren; and two step-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by two
sisters, Mildred and Sarah; two brothers, George and Robert; and one
granddaughter.
Funeral services were held on Friday morning, September 28, from the Gesche
Funeral Home in Neillsville. The Rev. Joseph Henseler of St. Mary’s Catholic
Church officiated; burial was in a Broadhead Cemetery.

Gress, Donald W. (30 March 1964 – 12 September 1984)
Donald W. Gress died on Wednesday afternoon, September 12, after undergoing a
heart transplant
at Pittsburgh’s Presbyterian Hospital.
The deceased was born on March 30, 1964, in Seville, Spain. He received his
education in Neillsville, graduating from high school in 1982. He then attended
UW-Eau Claire for one year.
Gress had been employed by the Neillsville Holiday Station-Store for several
years and also worked as a bartender at the Royal Shaft bar.
Several months ago, Gress became ill, and it was found that his heart had been
irreparably damaged by a virus infection. This necessitated a heart transplant.
Surviving him are his parents, Lowell and Cara Jean Gress, and a brother, Scott.
He is also survived by his paternal grandparents, Art and Viva Gress, also of
Neillsville.
Funeral services were held on Saturday afternoon, September 15, from the
Neillsville United Church of Christ, with Rev. Mark Voll officiated at the
service, with burial made in the Neillsville City Cemetery. Music at the service
was offered by Lori Anding and Deon Spangler. Pallbearers were Tony Sikora,
Monte Kuechenmeister, James Urlaub and Mike, Mark and Bryan Toelle. The Gesche
Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.

Haines, Eleanore (26 May 1908 – 28 September 1984)
Funeral services for Eleanore Haines were held on Monday afternoon, October 1,
from the Neillsville United Church of Christ. The Rev. Mark Voll officiated with
burial made in the Dells Dam Cemetery. The Gesche Funeral Home was in charge of
arrangements. Mrs. Haines, 76, died on Friday, September 28, in Neillsville
Memorial Hospital.
The deceased was born on May 26, 1908, in Sturtevant to Ben and Agnes (Deltz)
Kimpel. She received her education in Racine schools and then worked in that
city for several years. She later moved to DeKalb, Illinois. On August 23, 1953,
she married Ivo Haines in Illinois ceremonies. The couple made their home in the
Neillsville area. She was a member of the United Church of Christ and the
Eastern Star.

Miller, Andrew A. (16 June 1907 – 25 September 1984)
A longtime tavern owner in the Sherwood and Neillsville areas, Andrew A. Miller,
77, died in Neillsville Memorial Hospital on Tuesday, September 25. Miller had
been a resident of Neillsville Memorial Home for the past several years due to
failing health.
Miller was born on June 16, 1907. Om Beaver Dam to Agid and Anna Miller. He
received is education in Beaver Dam Schools and then worked for the Monarch
Range Company in Wisconsin Rapids for a few years. He then was employed by
Marshfield Homes for many years, retiring in 1972. He owned and operated Andy’s
Bar in the Town of Sherwood and also the Rooster Bar in Neillsville.
Surviving him is a son, Dennis, Beaver Dam; four sisters, Mrs. Ralph (Anna May)
Plantenberg of Astico, Mrs. Marcella Indermulhe of Beaver Dam, Mrs. Bob
(Genevieve) Mahoney of Suring and Carol Miller of Lamoria; four brothers, Ray,
Carl and Norbert, all of Beaver Dam, and Robert of Green Bay; four
grandchildren; and two great grandchildren. He was preceded in death by two
brothers, Arnold and George.
Funeral services were held on Friday afternoon, September 28, from the Gesche
Funeral Home in Neillsville with the Rev. Joseph Henseler of St. Mary’s Catholic
Church officiating, with burial made in the Hatfield Cemetery.

Moullette, Justh M. (4 February 1934 – 26 September 1984)
Neillsville native Judith M. Moullette, 50, of Rice Lake died Wednesday,
September 26, at her home.
The former Judtih Dudei was born on February4, 1934, in Neillsville. On
September 9, 1956, she married Thomas Moullette in Rice Lake.
She had been employed as a registered Nurse for Lakeside Methodist Hospital and
Lakeview Medical Center in Rice Lake for the past 22 years. She was a member of
the United Presbyterian Church in Rice Lake and is a member of the Fortnightly
Club.
She is survived by her husband; a daughter, Nancy Jonsson, Palm Springs,
California; two sons, Steven and Robert, both of Rice Lake; and a grandson.
Funeral services were held on Saturday afternoon, September 29, from the United
Presbyterian Church with the Rev. Donald Howard officiating. Burial was made in
Rice Lake. The Appleyard Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.

Scherer, Charles W. (16 December 1928 – 10 September 1984)
Charles W.; Scherer, 55, of Windsor died suddenly on September 10 while at work
in Appleton.
Scherer was born in Marshfield on December 16, 1928, to Nicholas and Elsie
(Snyder) Scherer. He was raised in Neillsville and graduated from Neillsville
High School in 1946. He was employed by the Neillsville Telephone Company for
four years and then worked for the Department of the Army at Fort McCoy and in
Milwaukee.
He married the former Verna Rockney in September 30, 1950, in Black River Falls
ceremonies. In 1971, he started working as a resident engineer for the Federal
Aviation Administration and the couple lived in Windsor since that time.
Survivors include, besides his wife, his mother, Elsie Scherer, Waunakee; a son,
Scott, Deforest; three daughters, Mrs. Larry (Pamela) Huisman of Deforest, Mrs.
Jeff (Janel) Minick of Windsor and Shelly at home; a sister, Mrs. J.P. (Betty)
Malone, Hatfield; and four granddaughters.
Funeral services were held on Thursday morning, September 13, from St. Joseph
Catholic Church in Black River Falls with the Rev. James Murphy officiating.
Burial was in the Hatfield Cemetery with the Torgerson Funeral Home of Black
River Falls in charge of arrangements. Pallbearers were Harvey Leis, Theodore
Schmidt, H.P. Gjerseth, Claude Smith, James and Richard Kramer.

Sternitzky, Laura (24 March 1905 – 24 September 1984)
Mrs. Rudolph (Laura) Sternitzky, 79, of Rt. 1 Granton, died on Monday, September
24, in the hospice unit of St. Joseph’s Hospital, Marshfield. She succumbed to a
brain tumor.
The former Laura Reisner was born on March 24, 1905, in Adell to Charles and
Emma (Klietz) Reisner. At a young age, she moved with her parents to the Granton
area. She received her education in Zion parochial school. On September 16,
1925, she married Rudolph Sternitzky. They made their home on a farm in the Town
of Lynn.
Surviving her, besides her husband, is a son, Warren, Granton; two daughters,
Lorraine Nowak of Granton and LaVonne Schmidt of Marshfield; eight
grandchildren; five step-grandchildren; two great grandchildren; and three
step-great grandchildren. Joining them are two brothers, Oscar Reisner of Owen
and Harold Reisner, Granton; and three stepsisters, Leona Sternitzky of
Neillsville Memorial Home, Lovella Garbisch of Granton and Villa Gotter of
Milwaukee. She was predeceased by two sons, Forest and Leon; a grandson; and a
sister, Mrs. Carl (Leona) Bartsch.
Funeral services were held on Thursday, September 27, from Zion Lutheran Church
in Granton with the Rev. E.T. Keller of Pittsville officiating. Burial was in
the church cemetery; grandsons Michael and Thomas Schmidt, Roman and Randy Nowak
and Dennis and Andrew Sternitzky were pallbearers.

Sterzinger, Karen (29 August 1955 – 27 September 1984)
Karen Sterzinger, 29, of Granton died in St. Joseph’s Hospital, Marshfield, on
Thursday, September 27.
The deceased was born on August 29, 1955, in Marshfield to Walter and Edna
Redig. She received her education in Marshfield schools. On November 6, 1976,
she married Ronald Sterzinger in Neillsville ceremonies and made their home in
that community. In April of this year they moved to Granton. She was a member of
St. Stephen’s parish.
Surviving her, besides her husband and parents, is a son, Christopher. They are
joined by four brothers, Walter, Jr., of Port Washington and Richard, Robert and
Dennis, all of Marshfield; and four sisters, Mrs. Kenneth (Helen) Kilty of
Unity, Mrs. Robert (Audrey) Maske, Darla Mead and Carol Sterzinger of
Marshfield.
Funeral services were held on Saturday morning, September 29, from St. Stephen’s
Catholic Church in Chili, The Rev. Charles Schumacher officiated with burial
made in the parish cemetery. The Gilbertson Funeral Home of Granton was in
charge of arrangements.

Urban. Edward M. (8 September 1910 – 27 September 1984)
Columbia area resident Edward M. Urban, 74, died in Neillsville Memorial
Hospital on Thursday, September 27.
The deceased was born on September 8, 1910, in Chicago to Jacob and Helen
Patchen Urban. He received his education in Chicago schools and attended Lane
Tech. He then worked as a real estate broker for seven years.
Urban moved to the Neillsville area and made his home in the Town of Hewett. He
worked at the Chippewa County Hospital at Chippewa Falls until retiring in 1979.
He married Barbara Holland in December 25, 19(smudge), Chicago ceremonies.
Surviving him is his wife. He was preceded in death by a sister, Helen.
Funeral services were held from the Gesche Funeral Home in Neillsville on
Saturday afternoon, September 29. The Rev. Joseph Henseler of St. Mary’s
Catholic Church officiated. Burial was made in the Columbia Cemetery, in the
Town of Hewett, with pallbearers George Mashin, Elmer Hoesly Harvey Sherman,
Robert and Rudolph Ulrich and Daniel Poppe.
