Humbird United Methodist (Celebrates Centennial - 1984)
The Humbird United Methodist Church observed its centennial on Sunday, October
7. The following is a history of the church as compiled by Joy Seig of Humbird:
In 1884, Fairchild and Humbird churches were combined as a charge, under the
pastorate of a Rev. Gallaway, thus forming the first Humbird Methodist Church.
For a few years church was held in the hall above the Simons Hardware Store,
owned by F.J. Simons.
The present church building was constructed in 1886. The lumber for the church
was cut and sawed at the Ed Carter mill a few miles east of Humbird and most of
it was donated by the mill owner E. D. Carter. It was hauled from the woods by
an ox team belonging to George Crandall, one of the leading officials of the
church at that time.
The church was dedicated with special services in 1887.
Six pastors had served the church by 1900. A parsonage was erected then at a
cost of $1,200.
In 1908, Humbird became a charge alone, and the Rev. A. E. Smith was appointed
to serve for two years. In 1910, Humbird and Fairchild were again joined as a
charge.
In the fall of 1925, Humbird was put on with the Merrillan, and Alma Center
churches to form a charge, eliminating Fairchild.
In 1944, the parsonage was sold, and the money deposited in a bank for a fund to
build a basement for the church. This became a two-year project and cost $4,000.
A new furnace was installed at this time.
In June 1957, Humbird and Fairchild again formed a charge and Alma Center and
Merrillan became another charge. A three-point charge was formed with Humbird,
Fairchild and Augusta.
The Ralph Walker was then the pastor. Eventually the Humbird United Church of
Christ was added to this charge, with the Rev. Walker being assisted by student
pastor Russell Christianson.
In 1980 the United Church of Christ was dropped from the charge as was Augusta.
A Humbird, Fairchild, Neillsville charge was formed, and these three churches
continue to form the charge. The present pastor is Howard Ott, who came in June
1982 and resides at the Neillsville parsonage.

Granton Village President Robert Spry received a check for $317,000 from
Marcella Gilbertson of the Farmer’s Home Administration this past Monday,
representing a loan for the construction of the village’s new sewage treatment
facility. The FmHA loan was closed October 15, 1984, by Gilbertson of the

and outfall sewer was also constructed. The Granton Sewer Utility contributed
$14,400 in cash and the Village is receiving a Grant of approximately $47,800
from EPA and Wisconsin fund grant of $15,100 to complete the project. The FmHA
loan has a repayment period of 25 years with an interest rate of 7.125 percent
which will be paid back from revenues received. The Eau Claire District office
serves a nine county area and processes and services loans for multi-family
housing, Community Program loans and Community Facility loans and Grants.
