Daines, Seth E. (14 Dec. 1870 - 16 Aug. 1956)
Seth E. Daines died at the Marshfield, Wisconsin Hospital Thursday at 3:00 P.M. at the age of 85 years. Funeral services were held at the Lulloff Funeral Home Sunday afternoon, Rev. Roger Knutsen, pastor of the Colby Methodist church officiating, and internment was made in the Colby (Colby, Clark Co. Wis.) Cemetery. Pall bearers were Vern Loos, Sherman L. Loos, Ed Allmann, Tom Wicker, Earl Robinson and Ray Gries.
Mr. Daines organized Colby’s first telephone exchange, which he began after moving to Colby in 1909 from Vernon county, where he was born on December 14, 1870. He also started a machine shop which he operated until 1912 and then, in 1913, built the first garage in Colby, now the old section of the Buick garage, which he operated until 1922. In 1923, he moved onto a farm east of Dorchester where he resided until twelve years later when he returned to Colby to make his home here.
He was married at Virocqua on October 16, 1897, to Alice Glenn, who preceded him in death December 14, 1942. A daughter, Blanche, died in June 1927 and a son, Cyrus, died in October 1927.
Surviving are three children, Clifford of Owen, Mrs. Fred (Mildred) Tischendorf and Mrs. James (Louise) Erickson, both of Dorchester, six grand children and one great grand child.
Being of a congenial disposition, honest in all his dealings, Mr. Daines had many friends here who will always remember him for his good qualities.
