Cook, Mabel (13 Jan. 1880 - 1 Sept. 1956)

Miss Mabel Cook, Marathon county’s first woman supervising teacher and later assistant superintendent of schools, died Saturday in Chicago where she had been residing for a number of years. She was a native of Unity. Funeral services were held at the Lulloff Funeral Home Wednesday afternoon, Rev. Roger B. Knutsen officiating, and internment was made in the Colby (Colby, Clark Co. Wis.) Cemetery.

Miss Cook was born in Unity on January 13, 1880. She graduated from Unity High School and continued her education in Wausau. She taught school in Unity, Milan and Hortonville before accepting the appointment as Marathon county supervising teacher. She was a frequent visitor in Unity, her last visit being to attend the funeral of her brother, Assemblyman Walter E. Cook.

Surviving are two brothers, George S. Cook of Unity and Raymond D. Cook of Marathon, and a sister, Mrs. Edith Tollefson of St. Paul, Minn. Three brothers and three sisters preceded her in death.

Funeral services for Miss Mabel Cook, were held at the Lulloff Funeral Home last week Wednesday afternoon, Rev. Roger Knutsen, pastor of the Methodist church officiating.

During the rites, Miss Syrl Andrews of Spencer, a great-niece, sang, "Abide With Me" and "The Lord’s Prayer." Pall bearers, all nephews, were R. M. Cook of Wausau. Glen Mason of Thiensville, Donald Cook of Wisconsin Rapids, Rod Cook of Colby and Cal Cook of Unity.

Out of town people at the services were Mrs. Keith Tollefson of St. Paul. Mr. and Mrs. Glen Mason, Mr. and Mrs. R. H. Cook, Mr. and Mrs. Donald Cook, Mr. and Mrs. Raymond Cook of Marathon, Mr. and Mrs. S. A. Cook, Mr. and Mrs. Everett Capes of Marshfield, Mrs. R. P. Andrews and Syrl of Spencer, Mrs. Lila Niehaus and Miss Carol Niehaus of Marshfield, Mr. and Mrs. E. W. Healy of Stanley, Mr. and Mrs. Rod Cook, Mrs. Belva Loney, Miss Lydia Jones, Mrs. Otto Heintz and Mrs. John Coates of Colby, Wis.
