Scharer, Dr. Galen R. Sr. (28 APR 1924 - 15 AUG 2013)
Dr. Galen
R. Scharer Sr., 89, Rib Lake, died on Thursday, Aug. 15 at Golden LivingCenter
in Rib Lake, where he had resided the past two weeks, most recently under
hospice care.
Funeral services will be held on Monday, Aug. 19 at Good
Shepherd Catholic Church in Rib Lake, with Father Otto Bucher officiating.
Interment will be at Lakeview Cemetery in Rib Lake with full military rites
performed by the Rib Lake American Legion Military Honors Team. Active
pallbearers are Tom La Barge, Dennis Brahmer, Jay Winkler, Barry Anderson, Kevin
Radtke and Paul Wilke. Honorary pallbearers are Robert Bredlau, Celand
Melbinger, James Gummerson Sr. and Dr. Art Jarvis.
Visitation will be
held at the church on Sunday, Aug. 18 from 4 to 7 p.m. with a 6:45 Catholic
prayer service, and on Monday from 9:30 until the time of service.

Funeral Homes of Medford and Rib Lake assisted the family with arrangements.
Galen Scharer was born on April 28, 1924 in Rib Lake to the late Charles and
Anna (Jarosh) Scharer. He attended Rib Lake elementary schools, Rib Lake High
School, was a 1942 graduate of Monroe High School, attended the University of
Wisconsin-Madison, and was a 1948 graduate of Palmer College of Chiropractic in
Davenport, Iowa. He served in the United States Army in Germany from 1943 to
1946 during World War II.
On October 26, 1946 in Davenport, Iowa, he
married Dorothy Koehner, who survives. After his education, he established a
chiropractic practice in Owen, which he worked until his retirement in 1992. He
also owned and operated Scharer Evergreen Farms in Rib Lake.
He was a
member of Good Shepherd Catholic Church, Wisconsin Chiropractic Association,
Owen Kiwanis Club, Owen Masonic Lodge, 64 year member of Owen and Rib Lake
American Legion Clubs, Rib Lake Lions Club, Rib Lake Economic Development
Committee, lifetime member of Rib Lake Historical Society, Rib Lake Fish and
Game Association and volunteer member of the Rib Lake Community Club. He was a
Wisconsin delegate to the International Chiropractic Association, a city council
member of Owen, served on the Mid Wisconsin Bank board and the Owen/Curtiss
State Bank board, and was co-founder of Camp 28 Saloon Bunkhouse and Cook Shanty
in Rib Lake. He enjoyed hunting, fishing, traveling, music and his
grandchildren.
In addition to his wife, survivors include two children,
Debbie (Mike) Turner of Rib Lake and Dr. Galen (significant other Cheryl
Torhorst) Scharer II of Wausau; five siblings, Betty Elliott, Bob Gilbertson and
Steve Gilbertson, all of Elderon, and Sharon (Merle) Cornell and Mike (Georgia)
Gilbertson, both of Appleton; five grandchildren, Char Ann Sutherlin, Kimberly
(Doug) Lindholm, Dr. Justin (Tina) Scharer, Dr. Brandon (Christy) Scharer and
Dr. Nathan (Krista) Scharer; and nine great-grandchildren.
In addition to
his parents, he was preceded in death by a sister, Ruth.
In lieu of
flowers, the family requests memorials be given to the family for future
designation.
