High School Notes (27 Apr
1916)
Neillsville Wins Silver Cup: For the first time the Silver Cup
which is awarded to the school getting first place in oratory in the Western
Wisconsin League has come to Neillsville. Among the ten contestants which took
part in the League Contest at Black River Falls Friday night, Harry Zimmerman
was awarded first place and the cup. The cup may be retained for one year; or,
if it is won by the same school three times, it is retained permanently.
Walter Tragsdorf also took part in the contest and made a good showing. A large
delegation met the train Saturday afternoon and gave their orator and the cup a
royal welcome. On Monday morning Harry Zimmerman formally presented the cup to
the school, and Walter Tragsdorf made an appeal to the students to retain it in
their possession.
The bust of Shakespeare which was ordered by the Class
of 1915 finally arrived and was presented to the school on behalf of the class
by Kenneth Austin during the Shakespeare program Friday afternoon.
Mr.
Moody, manual training teacher in the County Training school at Wausau, who
spent his Easter vacation with Mr. Ohmart, visited school Monday.
Ethan
Peterson, ’15, who is attending Stevens Point Normal, was a high school visitor
Tuesday.
The Northland College Glee Club, which was contracted for some
time ago by the Athletic Association, gave a concert at the opera house Tuesday
night. The entertainment was one of the best given in Neillsville this year and
those who did not attend missed a musical treat. The concert deserved a much
larger attendance. The boys sang for the students at four o’clock and made a
decided hit.
Mr. Willard Colman of La Crosse gave the students a fine
entertainment at their assembly period Friday morning.
Maybelle Kampine
and Esther Jackson will go to Mondovi Friday to take part in the League
Declamatory Contest at that place. We hope Neillsville may be as successful as
in the Oratorical contest.
