Bogumill, Infant (Born & Abandoned - 18 Oct. 1920)

The Owen Enterprise early last fall told the story of the finding of a baby in a chicken coop on a farm a short distance from the Village of Thorp, which had been left there to die or to be found by some one who would care for it. The following report is now re-printed from the Thorp Courier of this week:

"Since the abandonment of the baby, District Attorney F. A. Jackson, assisted by other county officials and local parties, have searched for evidence of the party guilty of the placing of the infant in the chicken coop, with the result that on Thursday last a statement was secured from Peter Bogumill, of this village by Mr. Jackson, that he (Bogumill) was guilty of the offense and father of the child. A warrant was issued for both Mr. and Mrs. Bogumill and they voluntarily appeared before Judge O’Neill on Friday circuit court being in session, each pleading guilty to the charge of abandonment and were immediately sentenced to six months imprisonment in the county jail and are now serving their sentences.

Before pronouncing sentence, Judge O’Neill gave them a heart to heart talk upon the enormity of their crime and the probable death of the infant had it not been discovered by neighbors and its life saved. The evidence taken in the matter by the court was principally given by Mr. Bogumill and disclosed the fact that the baby was born on the night of Oct. 18th. Before daylight the following morning Mr. Bogumill took the infant to the chicken coop on the Grindzinski farm and abandoned it. During the following night he again visited the place leaving a bottle of milk which act he again repeated on the night before the child was found as related.

The baby is still in the care of its foster-mother, Mrs. F. P. Neiman.
