Merkel, Anna Irene (July 1920 - 29 Mar. 1921)
Anna Irene, the year and nine months old daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Arthur Merkel, died at her home in this city Monday morning at eleven o’clock, after suffering for more than a year with what is known as sarcoma of the eye.
It is supposed that the affliction was caused from a bruise the child received in a fall when about seven months old. At this time it became noticeable that her right eye was affected and a treatment was accordingly prescribed. It soon became evident that the case was something unusual and the parents were advised to seek the help of physicians who specialize in treating diseases of the eye.
The child was taken to Milwaukee where several famous specialists gave treatment but without very favorable results. A visit to the famous Mayo Brothers hospital at Rochester Minn., gave little or no encouragement and the growth in the eye continued to enlarge until a week before last Christmas she was taken to the Marshfield, Wisconsin Hospital and the eye was removed to relieve her terrible suffering. However, about four weeks later another growth appeared in the eye socket and this continued to enlarge until it extended out through the opening. Another made its appearance on the left temple but this one is said to have been of somewhat different character.
The case is considered to be one of the most unusual and is baffling to the most scientific and skillful physicians.
