Lawrenz, Carl E. (2 JAN 1912 - 20 OCT 2008)

Carl E. Lawrenz, 96, Algoma, was called to his eternal rest on Oct. 20, 2008. Funeral services were held at 11:30 a.m., on Saturday, Oct. 25, 2008, at the Schinderle Funeral Home, Algoma. The Rev. Roy Beyer officiated. Entombment was at the Knollwood Mausoleum, Manitowoc.

Carl E. Lawrenz was born in Rio Creek, to August and Martha (nee Schmelling) Lawrenz on Jan. 2, 1912. He was a graduate of Algoma High School and went on to earn his B.E. in 1934 from Wisconsin State University, River falls. In 1936, he married Viola Bathke at St. John’s Evangelical Lutheran Church, Rankin, by the Rev. Pautz. Teaching vocational agriculture in schools at Almond and Marinette led his career to a startup, in 1938, of a new vo-ag program at the Loyal High school. His career at Loyal lasted 27 years plus an additional two years as principal of the high school. In 1949, he was selected by his peers to be on the State Board of Agriculture Instructors from which he was chosen as the president in 1950-51. While residing in Loyal, he served as an officer at Trinity Lutheran Church. He was a member of St. Paul’s Evangelical Lutheran Church, Algoma. Earning his master’s of education degree in 1967 from the University of Wisconsin, Superior, he became the agriculture instructor at Lincoln High School, Manitowoc. While teaching at both Loyal and Lincoln, his FFA teams won many state Championships in crops and farm management.

Survivors include his wife of 72 years, Viola; two sons and daughters-in-law, Lynn and Donna Lou, Algoma, and Dr. Lon and Peggy, Tempe, Ariz.; four granddaughters, Lychelle, Chicago, Sam and her husband, Mark Prokash, Algoma, Lara and her husband, David Folmer, Castalion Springs, Tenn., and Amber and her husband, Aaron Zaragoza, Mesa, Ariz.; two grandsons, Damon and his wife, Jessica, Kansas City, Kan., and Trevor, Tempe, Ariz.; two great-granddaughters, Abby Renee Lawrenz, Kansas City, Kan., and Arika Zaragoza, Mesa, Ariz.; six great-grandsons, Justin Putman, Luxemburg, Hunter and Booker Prokash, Algoma, Andrew and Archer Zaragoza, Mesa, Ariz.; and David Folmer, Castalion Springs, Tenn.; one great-great-grandson, Landon Putman, Luxumburg; one sister, Ruth Ihlenfeldt, Kewaunee; one brother-in-law, August Duescher, Maribel; one sister-in-law, Ruth Blahnik, Crystal Lake, Ill., and many nieces and nephews.

Preceding him in death were his parents, August and Martha Lawrenz; his in-laws, Louis and Mary Bathke; his brother, Everett; his sister, Elaine Duescher; three sisters-in-law, Pearl Lawrenz, Alvina Rodrian and Marie Moede; and four brothers-in-law, Dayton Ihlenfeldt, Reinhold Rodrian, Ervin Moede and Dave Blahnik.

In lieu of expressions of sympathy, a memorial fund has been established in his name.
