Poppe, Geo. (Barn hit by lightning - Jul 1938)
The 36 x 70 foot barn on the George Poppe farm 10 1/2 miles northwest of
here (Greenwood, Clark Co., Wis.) on detour Highway 73, was struck by lightning
about midnight Monday night and burned to the ground.
Nothing was saved
from the barn. The loss included the season's entire hay crop, a cow, calf and
bull, hay loader and milking machine. The place had recently been electrified by
the REA.
The Poppe family was awake by the time the bolt struck, and said
the barn burst into flames immediately, making it impossible to save even the
livestock. The barn was built about 18 years ago.
The loss is partly
covered by insurance. Neighbors who gathered at the farm were unable to help in
any way.
