Smalzal, Gertrude Mary (Marrriage - 12 Oct. 1957)

Miss Gertrude Mary Smalzal, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Frank Smalzal of Milladore, became the bride of Joseph Bruno Sazama, son of Mr. and Mrs. Mayme Sazama of Colby, Route 1, in a 9:30 o’clock ceremony on Saturday morning, Oct. 12, in St. Killian’s Catholic church at Blenker, Rev. Robert Oberwinder officiating.

For her wedding the bride chose a nylon lace over taffeta gown, a headband trimmed with pearls and sequins that held her net and lace veil and a bouquet consisting of a white orchid surrounded by red roses and lilies of the valley. The streamers that extended from her bouquet were caught with roses and lilies of the valley. A stand-up collar finished the neckline of the long-sleeved bodice and two rows of nylon net over taffeta adorned the full skirt.

Miss Mary Anne Brandl of Marshfield, was maid of honor for her cousin. She appeared in an orchid floor-length frock of nylon lace and net over taffeta. The strapless bodice was completed with a short-sleeved lace jacket, and ruffles detailed the bouffant skirt. She carried a bouquet of orchid roses and white camellias and wore a headpiece trimmed with sequins and finished with a matching veil.

Similarly attired were the bridesmaids - Mrs. Vernon Smalzal of Marshfield, a sister-in-law of the bride, in yellow and Mrs. Frank Brodjeski of Wausau, a sister of the groom in green.

The groom invited his brother, Daniel Sazama of Colby, Route 1, to be best man; husbands of the bridesmaids to be groomsmen, and cousins of the bride and groom - Dick Schmutzer of Milladore and Warren Berg of Colby, Wis. - to be ushers.

St. Killian’s Hall was the setting for the major portion of the day’s festivities - the 11 a.m. breakfast, the 4:30 p.m. dinner, and the afternoon reception. That evening the newlyweds were honored at a dance in the Sheridan Ballroom.

When they return from their honeymoon, which they are spending in North Dakota, the newlyweds will go to housekeeping at 1608 S. Central Ave., Marshfield.
