Matt, as he was known to his many friends in this community passed away at the home of his family in Rock Island, Ill., where he had been for the past month after being dismissed from St. Joseph’s Hospital at Marshfield, where he had been hospitalized since June 1. He died of a heart attack.
Mathew H. Williams was born at Nantymonel, Wales on Sept. 9, 1873. As a youngster of nine years he came to this country with his parents, settling in Illinois. As he became older he first associated himself with his father and his profession in the mining business at Cable and Sherrard, Ill., where he also received his schooling.
On Sept. 30, 1902 he was united in marriage to Dacie Myers at Rock Island, Ill. For four years after the marriage Matt owned and operated a store at Eire, Ill. Later he went into the land sales business and soon thereafter first came to this community with buyers. After a few business trips and visits here he became intrigued with the community which was then in its pioneer days of development with the lumbering industry being the incentive for people to move here. Matt associated himself with the John S. Owen Lumber Co. as their land salesman disposing of the company’s land after it had been cleared of timber for farming purposes.
Matt was the fortunate possessor of an enviable personality. He was always pleasant, courteous and smiling, with an interest in his friends and the affairs of the community. He was faithful worker for many years and his numerous friends regret that his health did not permit more years of enjoyment. He had many friends, all of whom extend sincere sympathy to this family.
Surviving him are his wife and one daughter, Marion, and four grandchildren. He was a member of the Owen Masonic Lodge 317 and a member of the First Congregational Church of this city.
