Lind, Howard W. (November 16, 1923 - November 23, 2008)
Howard W. Lind, 85, Colby, and formerly of Lancaster, died Sunday, November 23, 2008 at the Palliative Care Unit in St. Joseph’s Hospital, Marshfield.
Howard was born November 16, 1923 in Stitzer, WI. He was the only child of Portia (Schuppener) Lind and Charles Lind. He grew up in Stitzer, attending the two room State Grade School before graduating from Fennimore High School in 1941.
Howard was a WWII Army veteran, serving in Guadalcanal, as well as the Philippines and the Solomon Islands. He is a former member of the Fennimore VFW.
After the war, Howard returned home to Stitzer. He married "the girl next door", Beverly Ann Becker, in 1952. They had one child, a daughter, Cherie (Welsh) Lind, born August 14, 1954.
Howard worked road construction for nearly forty years for Becker and Tuckwood Contractors, later becoming Croft Construction, until his retirement in 1985.
Following retirement, Howard stayed busy with numerous jobs and volunteer activities. He worked for the new Stitzer water and sewer system and was caretaker for the Lutheran cemetery, also in Stitzer. Howard spent many hours caring for his mother-in-law and other elderly people in town. After his wife Beverly’s retirement from teaching at Fennimore Elementary School, the couple moved to Lancaster. There Howard volunteered as a courier for the Lancaster hospital and clinic for ten years.
Howard loved watching the Green Bay Packers, Wisconsin Badgers, and of course, the Milwaukee Brewers. But above all, he enjoyed watching all three of his grandchildren, as they played a variety of sports for the Abbotsford Falcons. Howard was a talented fast pitch softball player and played on the Stitzer and Nelson Motors teams for many years in the 40’s and 50’s. Howard loved the family dogs and will be remembered as a humble man, always willing to help his family, friends, and neighbors.
Howard is survived by his wife of 56 years, Beverly, who still resides at the Pine Ridge Assisted Living Facility in Colby, Wis. A daughter, Cherie Welsh, and husband Reed, of Abbotsford, Wis. He is further survived by three grandchildren; Josh (Wendy) Welsh of Whitefish Bay, Jordan (Lee) Peterson of West Palm Beach, FL, and Jenna Welsh of Menomonie. Howard was fortunate to know the joy of having a great grandchild, when Taylor Joy Welsh was born to Josh and Wendy in 2007.
A celebration of Howard’s life will be held at the Pine Ridge Assisted Living Facility in Colby, on Sunday, December 28 with a family greeting beginning at 1:00, followed by a short service and refreshments.
The Maurina-Schilling Funeral Home is assisting in the cremation and memorial arrangements.
A memorial in Howard’s name will be given to the Stitzer Park and Softball Complex and the Stitzer Lutheran Cemetery Fund.
