Leidiger, August (1848? - 15 SEP 1884)

Considerable excitement has prevailed at Curtiss during the past week and has extended to this place of the disappearance of Aug. Leidiger.

Mr. Leidiger started out on a hunting expedition on Monday afternoon of last week and was not seen again until Sunday afternoon, when his remains were discovered about two miles west of the village, near a skidway on an old logging road.

Hundreds of men has been searching the forests for him and had several days before been within 20 feet of where he was found.

Upon examination, it was discovered that he had been shot in two places, through the left side of the body, in the region of the stomach, the ball going straight through and out at the back, and in the left side of the neck, just below the ear, the ball passing upward and out just above the right ear. The two shots were so located as to preclude any possibility of his having fire them himself, and, besides, the hole in the breast was, evidently made by a larger ball than that carried by his gun.

The remains were taken to his late residence and an inquest was Sunday evening, the jury rendering a verdict to the effect that the deceased came to his death from the affects of gunshot wounds inflicted by some unknown person or persons.

No reason can be assigned for the killing of Leidiger, as he was known as a quiet, pleasant, inoffensive gentleman, well liked by all who knew him.

The deceased was about 36 years of age, married. He was a son of Louis Leidiger, a prominent millwright, of Sheboygan, and had lived in this neighborhood five or six years.
