Smith, Mary (24 AUG 1873 - 7 MAR 1948)

Funeral services were conducted by Rev. A. M. Muckerheide at St. Bernard’s Church, Wednesday morning, March 10th for Mrs. Wm. Smith, who passed away at her farm home in the Town of Thorp (Clark Co., Wis.) on March 7, 1948, death being caused by Coronary Thrombosis. She had reached the age of 74 years, 6 months and 13 days.

Mary Van Ert was born in Hollandtown, Wis., on Aug. 24, 1873. While a young girl she moved with her parents to Butler Co., Nebraska, then to Rushville, Sheridan Co., Neb., where she was united in marriage to Wm. Smith in Nov. 1889. They lived there for about seven years, coming to Thorp in April 1897, where she resided until death.

Besides her husband, she is survived by eight sons, Martin of Tomahawk, Sylvester of Milwaukee, Lawrence of Wausau, George of Indiana, Harry and Ervin of Stanley, William Jr. of Owen, and Leonard at home; one daughter, Mrs. Geo. Schmidt of Thorp; one brother, Peter Van Ert, Stanley, thirty-two grandchildren and thirteen great-grandchildren.

She was laid to rest in St. Bernard’s Cemetery, with one nephew, Louis Van Ert and five grandsons, Edward, Anthony Daniel, Jack and Dick Smith, serving as pallbearers.
