James S. Tipping, 91, Marshfield, Wisconsin, died on Saturday, Nov. 22, 2008, at Golden Living Center at Three Oaks, Marshfield. A memorial service will be held at a later date.
James Stanton Tipping was born on Dec. 28, 1916, in Pittsburgh, Pa., to Joseph and Margaret (nee Wilson) Tipping. He attended the University of Pittsburgh for both undergraduate and medical school. As a medical officer in the United States Army in World War ll, he was awarded the European African Middle Eastern Service Medal with four Campaign Stars and the Bronze Arrowhead for landing on Omaha Beach during D-Day invasion of Normandy. He also received the Combat Medical Badge and the Bronze Star Medal, along with numerous other recognitions. He married Elsie Jane Young on Jan. 10, 1946, in New York City. He was a physician in private practice for more than 30 years. As a clinical associate professor of Medicine at the University of Pittsburgh, he taught medical students throughout his career.
Survivors include his children, Dr. Stuart J. (Christine) Tipping, Marshfield, and Dr. Margaret (Fritz) Menninger, Ojai, Calif.; four grandchildren; and one brother, Howard Tipping, Pittsburgh.
Memorial donations may be made to the Ministry Home Care Hospice in Marshfield or the American Cancer Society.
