Benzschawel, Nicholas Sr. (9 MAY 1866 - 4 FEB 1949)

Nicholas Benzschawel Sr. passed away of old age infirmities at the home of his son-in-law and daughter, Mr. and Mrs. Anton J. Micke in the Town of Worden (Clark Co., Wis.) on Friday, Feb. 4th, 1949. He had reached the age of 82 years and 9 months.

Mr. Benzschawel, a respected and thrifty farmer of the Town of Worden for many years, was born in Germany on May 9, 1866. At the age of sixteen years he came to America and resided for several years at Highcliff, Wis.

On April 21, 1889, he was united in marriage to Barbara Keller at St. John’s, Wis., who preceded him in death June 18, 1937. The couple came to Thorp with their family fifty years ago and settled on a farm in the Town of Worden, which is now occupied by his son Frank Benzschawel. Mr. Benzschawel retired from farming 18 years ago and moved to the city of Thorp, where he has resided until about a year ago. Since that time he has been making his home with various members of his family in this vicinity.

He is survived by six sons, Nick Jr., Joseph, Robert and Frank of Thorp, Anton of Stanley and Peter of Madison; three daughters, (Edith) Mrs. Andrew Heiman of Thorp, (Clara) Mrs. Otto Schoenberger of St. Paul, and (Margaret) Mrs. Tony Micke of Thorp; two brothers, Matt Benzschawel, Manitowoc and Mike Benzschawel of Appleton; forty-six grandchildren and twenty-two great-grandchildren.

Rev. A.M. Muckerheide conducted the Requiem Mass for the deceased at St. Bernard’s Church at 9:30, Tuesday morning, Feb. 8th. Interment took place in St. Bernard’s Cemetery with the following grandsons serving as pallbearers: Matt, Ervin, Donald, James and William Benzschawel and Raymond Heiman.
