Short, Vivian (OCT 1904 - 7 DEC 1905)
While James Short Jr. and wife of Shortville (Clark Co., Wis.) were away from the house last Thursday morning the house caught fire and was burned to the ground and their 14-month-old daughter was burned in it.
Mr. Short and his wife had risen early and gone out to milk and do some other chores. They left the baby asleep in bed. A lighted lamp stood on a stand, and a little dog was loose in the room. There is no telling how the fire started. The baby might have awakened and pulled the stand over, or the dog might have done it. The opinion is that the fire started someway from the lamp.
When the fire was discovered the house was all in flames and nothing could be done to save the child. Afterward the debris was searched and small particles of the baby’s charred bones were found.
The grief stricken father and mother have the sympathy of all in their great sorrow. They also lost all of their household goods.
