Smith, Edward (6 Oct 1830 - 22 Jan 1907)
Edward Smith, one of the pioneers of the north end of the county, died at Withee (Clark Co., Wis.), Tuesday, at the age of 74 years. Mr. Smith was born at Bath, England, and in his early manhood he followed the sea, becoming captain of a ship. An injury compelled him to give up his calling, and twenty years ago he settled at Longwood (Clark Co.), then a prominent stopping place for loggers, and opened a hotel.
He was married to Amanda Barnes in 1854, and seven children were born, six of whom remain to comfort the bereaved wife. The children are Harriet Kayhart of Christie, Una McMillan of Portland, Ore., Annie Howard of Marshfield, Mo., William of Los Angeles, Calif., Edward S. and Mildred of Withee. Walter Smith died about three years ago.
Mr. Smith was a clever and excellent old gentleman and has a host of friends who have known him since he first settled in Clark County. Mrs. Fred Draper of this city is a granddaughter, and Mr. and Mrs. Draper will attend the funeral.
