Michels, June H. (22 July 1922 - 17 January 2009)

June H. Michels, 86, of Alma Center died Saturday, Jan. 17, 2009, at Pine View Care Center, Black River Falls.

June was born July 22, 1922, in the Fairview area of Clark County to parents Louis and Helen A. (Putman) Fitzmaurice. She graduated from Humbird High School and married George H. Michels June 27, 1944, at St. Joseph’s Catholic Church in Fairview.

The couple operated a dairy farm in the Alma Center area for many years. June was also employed at Anthony’s Clothing Store and at Roma Pizza, both in Black River Falls.

June was an active member of Saint Mary’s Altar Society at Immaculate Conception Catholic Church in Alma Center. She also held several offices in the local chapter of Catholic Family Life Insurance. She served as a District I auxiliary office of the AMPI. She also served as a voter registration and library volunteer in Alma Center. June was a longtime member of the Garden Valley Homemakers of Jackson County.

In addition to spending time with her family, June greatly enjoyed flower gardening, especially raising beautiful geraniums and peonies. She also enjoyed going shopping and coordinating and accessorizing her wardrobe. She was a very good cook and a well-read individual.

June is survived by three sons, Ralph (Betty) Michels of West Allis, Paul (Kathy) Michels of Chippewa Falls and Carl (Peggy) Michels of Montgomery, MN; two daughters, MaryAnn (Robert) Zimney of Milwaukee and Diane (Jack) Bowman of Menomonie; one brother, Dale (Joan) Fitzmaurice of Janesville; nine grandchildren, Michelle (Scott) Maas, John Zimney, Christopher (Debbie) Bowman, Nicole (Steve) Schaefer, Lori (Richard) Arndt, Patrick (Connie) Michels, Melissa (Joel) McRoberts, Mandie (fiancé Brandon Beyl) Michels and Jennifer Michels; 15 great-grandchildren, Riley, Gunner, Cassie, Tyler, Steele, Chandler, Cameron, Kate, Lauren, Julia, Morgan, Alexandra, Hunter, Layne and Ireland; besides many other relatives and friends.

June was preceded in death by her parents; by her husband, George, March 23, 1996; and by her sisters, Dorothy Jinkerson and Violetta VanderKooi.

Funeral services for June H. Michels were held at 10:30 a.m. Tuesday, Jan. 20, 2009, at Immaculate Conception Catholic Church, Alma Center, with Reverend Jude Dioka officiating. Burial took place in Saint Mary’s Catholic Cemetery, Alma Center. Friends called at the Jensen-Modjeski Funeral Home, Hixton Monday evening from 4 p.m. to 7 p.m. with a 6:30 Rosary service and at the church Tuesday one hour prior to services.

Casketbearers were Richard Arndt, Brandon Beyl, Christopher Bowman, Scott Maas, Joel McRoberts, Patrick Michels, Steve Schaefer and John Zimney.
