1987 Clark County Jail Museum (October Meeting - 1 October 2013)

Officers of the 1897 Jail Museum met Tuesday, Oct. 1, for the monthly report to the members. Following the secretary’s and treasurer’s reports, president Stephen Roberts asked for docents for a large group tour Friday, Oct. 5, numbering about 40 students and several adult chaperones. The museum will also be open and free to the public (with no tours) on picture day during the Neillsville Autumn Harvest Festival from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. Sunday, Oct. 13.

More photos have been donated by various local families, and another group of glass slides has been scanned into the system. Digitized photos can be shared and copies can be printed with minimal handling of the originals. Work continues to accession new donations and complete the transfer of hand-written inventory cards into the digital record.

Vice-President Shirley Anderson reported on the Wisconsin Historical Society (WHS) West Central Regional Meeting that was held Saturday Sept. 21, at the Stanley Area Historical Society. There was a mini workshop on making the most of a photo collection, an excellent lunch, a tour of the host museum, a special presentation on the logging history of the Chippewa Valley and the networking enjoyed by many historical societies from Chippewa and Clark Counties.

The WHS annual meeting will be held in Wisconsin Rapids the weekend of Oct. 12 and 13. Many speakers and workshops will be available.

The next membership meeting, open to the public will be held at 7 p.m. Tuesday, Nov. 5, at the Museum at 215 East Fifth Street in Neillsville. Call any of the officers or the museum office (715-743-2150) to help out, for a tour or to do some research on local history or families.
