Abbotsford, Wis. - St. Bernard’s Catholic (First Communion - 23 June 1940)
Class of First Communicants
A class of six children received their first holy communion, Sunday morning, at St. Bernard’s Catholic church. This solemn ceremony culminated the two weeks of religious instruction given the children by Sister Jeremias and Sister Gregory of the Order of St. Francis.
The class was composed of Tommy Hoffman, Donald Riehle, James Steffen, Jimmy Van Rooy, Betty Riehle and Shirley Seidel. The Rev. C. D. Brady, pastor of the church, read the eight o’clock mass at which the children’s choir sang appropriate hymns, and joined the first communicants in receiving communion.
The altars in the church were resplendent with their gold lace, lighted candles and baskets of peonies and mock orange blossoms.
