Schafer, Melvin John (6 November 1908 - 6 March 1971)

Funeral services for Melvin John Schafer, 62, of Neillsville, who died of an apparent heart attack as he was returning to the car after ice fishing on Lake Onalaska Saturday, were to be held Wednesday, March 10 at 1:30 p.m. from the Georgas Funeral Home. The Rev. Melvin Nickel of the United Methodist Church was to officiate and burial was to be made in the Town of Lynn Cemetery.

Melvin Schafer, the son of John F. and Elizabeth (Klein) Schafer, was born November 6, 1908, in the Town of Lynn, where he also received his education. His marriage to the former Leah (Quicker) Jakubowsky took place in Dubuque, Ia., on November 6, 1948. Mr. Schafer, who did construction work throughput his lifetime, had been employed by the Kluck construction Company of Stevens Point for the past 20 years. He was a veteran of World War II, having served in the armed forces from November 24, 1942 to November 19, 1945, the period from December 1, 1944 to October 25, 1945, spent in northern France.

Survivors, in addition to his wife, include his mother, Mrs. Elizabeth Schafer of Rt. 1 Granton, a daughter, Marlene, Mrs. Charles Harwick of Kingsford, Mich.; and seven grandchildren. He is also survived by a sister, Mrs. John (Violet) Backus of Wausau, and a brother, Gerald Schafer, of Rt. 1 Granton.

Funeral services for Melvin J. Schafer, 62, of Neillsville, who died March 6, were held Wednesday, March 10, at 1:30 p.m. from the Georgas Funeral Home. The Rev. Melvin Nickel of the United Methodist Church officiated and burial was made in the Town of Lynn Cemetery.

Pallbearers were: Raymond Barth, Wally Quicker, Jerry M. Opelt, Hubert Quicker, Jr., Jim Backus, and Norman Vanderwyst. Miss Julie Schmidt sang, “Nearer My God to Thee” and “Now the Day is over,” accompanied by Mrs. Jess W. Scott.
