John H. Roberts had a peaceful leave-taking at the Palliative Care Unit of Marshfield, Wisconsin Hospital Feb. 19, 2009.
John was the eldest son of E. J. and Jessie (Wolfe) Roberts. He was born April 5, 1921, in St. Paul, MN, and was united in marriage to Dorothy J. King, daughter of C. Arthur and Eva King of Mankato, MN, June 6, 1944, in Mankato, MN. He attended grade school in Marshfield and Sioux Falls, SD., and graduated high school in Mankato.
He served in the U. S. Army Air Corp from 1942 to 1946 as a weather forecaster. After leaving the service, he attended Macalester College in ST. Paul, MN. He worked briefly for J. C. Penney Co. before taking over a central and northern Wisconsin and Upper Peninsula of Michigan territory selling yearbooks for Taylor Publishing Co., class-rings for L. G. Balfour Co. graduation items for DeMoulin Bros and Co., and trophies to high schools and colleges, bringing his family to Neillsville in 1951.
He enjoyed golfing, traveling, following the weather and spending time with his family and friends. He was generous and active in many ways in Neillsville and with the United Church of Christ there.
He was preceded in death by his parents, wife, brother and sister-in-law.
He is survived by sons Steve (Barbara) of Neillsville and David of Newport, OR; daughter Nancy (Tom) Potter of Waunakee; six grandchildren; 13 great-grandchildren and four great-great-grandchildren.
A memorial service will be held Saturday, Feb. 28, 2009 at 2 p.m. at the United Church of Christ, Neillsville. A private family interment will occur at a later date.
