Sternitzky, Selma (24 Jan. 1915 - 22 Jan. 2002)

NEILLSVILLE - Selma Sternitzky, age 86, died at Neillsville Memorial Home on Jan. 22, 2002. She was a resident of the home since Aug. 23, 1994.

Funeral services will be Saturday, Jan. 26, 2002, at the Zion Lutheran Church - Missouri Synod in Granton. Pastor John Trewyn will officiate. Music will be provided by congregational singing. Caroline Helm will be the organist. Internment will be in the Zion Church Cemetery. Visitation will be from 4 to 8 p.m. Friday at the Gesche Funeral Home in Neillsville. Visitation at the church will be from 10 a.m. until the time of service.

Pallbearers will be Tim Schmitz, Terry Schmitz, David Schmitz, Kevin Schmitz, Jeffrey Fedie, Brian Fedie and Jacob Sternitzky.

Selma was born on Jan. 24, 1915, to Paul and Laura (Miles) Handke of the Granton area. She attended Romadka School. She married Clarence Sternitzky on Oct. 7, 1933, at the Zion American Lutheran Church Parsonage. They farmed in the town of Lynn until 1945, and moved to the town of York and farmed until 1981, when they then retired and moved to Granton until 1993. She and Clarence made lots of maple syrup. Making maple sugar candy was her specialty. She also enjoyed making doughnuts and coffeecakes, and she was a member of the Freemont Homemakers Club.

She is survived by four children, Lila (Jerry) Schmitz of Granton, Stanley (Karaleen) Sternitzky of Cameron, Velda (Dennis) Galloway of Etowak, North Carolina and Marvin (Roberta) Sternitzky of Blair. They observed their golden anniversary in October of 1983. Selma was a lifelong member of the Zion Lutheran Church in Granton.

Other survivors include 14 grandchildren and 24 great-grandchildren, Tim (Jane), Molly, Alexandra and Matthew Schmitz of Granton, Terry (Sandy), Tara, Kortney, Logan and Nicholas Schmitz of Granton, David (Karen), Kelsey, Carter and McKenzie Schmitz of Germantown, Kevin (fiancée Shelly Proffit) of Neillsville, Candace (Kevin), Amanda, Nicholas, Thomas and Curtis Huisman of Atwater, Minn., Cheryl (Douglas) Brandon, and Bryon Foth of Onieda, Janalee (Harold), Jill, Jamie and Justin Kracht of Stillwater, Minn., Sarah (Richard), Megan and Matthew Blanchard of Marshfield, Jeffrey (Judy) and Natalie Fedie of Dallas Texas, Brian Fedie of Midwest City, Okla., Carman (Mark) Menza of Carrollton, Texas, Susan (Jerry) Byerly of Taylor, S. C., Jacob Sternitzky of Granton; step-grandchildren; Melissa Schleusner, Desiree and Jasmine; brother-in-law, Thearon (Linnie) Sternitzky of Maple Grove, Wash.; sisters-in-law, Clara (Leslie) Lewis of Loyal, and Francis Sternitzky of Marshfield.

She was preceded in death by her husband, her parents and sister, Mildred Grade and Lester Handke.

Selma will be sadly missed by everyone.

Memorials may be given to the Zion Lutheran Church.

The Gesche Funeral Home, Neillsville is assisting Selma’s family with arrangements.
