Scott A. Schade, 39, formerly of Marshfield was lost to us Feb. 23, 2009.

Scott died in Lawton, Okla., near Fort Sill, his last duty station. Scott Schade was an American patriot, a man who dedicated his life to protecting the United States. During Scott's illustrious military career, he defended freedom in Korea, Bosnia and Iraq. Scott Schade was a man of honor.

Scott Anthony Schade, beloved son of Donald and Sandra (Meyer) Schade, beloved brother of Gary Schade and best friend to Tom Heinzen, was born Dec. 20, 1969, in Burlington. Scott Schade grew up in Spencer, graduating from Spencer High School in 1989. In his youth, Scott enjoyed hunting, fishing, hiking, softball and later golf along with spending time with his friends and family.

Scott and Gary spent a great deal of time with their beloved grandparents; "ED" Adleheart Schade and Ruth Schade as they grew up.

Scott married Jacqueline McMillan in 1994. They have a son, Zacharian, and four stepdaughters, Danita, Damika, Victoria and Lesteria.

SGM Schade entered basic training Dec. 21, 1987. After graduating from basic training and advanced individual training, Scott's first duty station was Camp Stanley in the Republic of Korea, arriving there in October of 1991 and serving as a Howitzer cannoneer in the 8th Battalion of the 8th Field Artillery. SGM Schade's next assignment was to Fort Bragg North Carolina where he served as an ammunition team chief in the 5th Battalion of the 8th Artillery Brigade and later in the 1-321st Field Artillery Battalion (Airborne). Upon promotion to sergeant, Scott served as a Howitzer section chief; a role he held for most of the next four years in several different units. In October of 1996, SGM Schade transferred to Germany and served at the Warner Barracks for the next two and a half years in the 1-6th Field Artillery. During this period SGM Schade served a forward deployed tour in Bosnia. In 1999, SGM Schade rotated to Ft. Sill, Okla., where he served first as a drill sergeant and later as a senior drill sergeant in the 1st Battalion of the 19th Field Artillery Regiment. In November 2001, SGM Schade became the Battalions Operations Sergeant for the 3-18th Field Artillery, a position he held during a tour in Iraq. In March of 2004, SGM Schade returned to Ft. Sill as the First Sergeant of Headquarters and Head Quarters Battery, 3-18th Field Artillery. In August of 2004, SGM Schade was transferred to serve as the first sergeant of the basic noncommissioned officer course at FT Sill. In July of 2006, SGM Schade returned to Ft. Bragg, serving as the operations sergeant major for the 1-321st Field Artillery (Airborne). SGM Schade next graduated from the U.S. Sergeant Major's Academy and returned to Ft. Sill where, he last served as the operations sergeant major of the 214th Field Artillery Brigade.

SGM Schade's awards and decorations include the Bronze Star Medal, the Meritorious Service Medal (fourth award), the Army Commendation Medal (second award), the Army Achievement Medal (13th award), the Good Conduct Medal (fifth award) the National Defense Service Medal (second award), the Armed Forces Expeditionary Medal, the Global War on Terrorism Expeditionary Medal, the Global War on Terrorism Service Medal, the Korea Defense Service Medal, the Armed Forces Service Medal, the Humanitarian Service Medal, the Non Commissioned Officer Professional Development Ribbon (fourth Award) the Army Service Ribbon, the Over Seas Ribbon and the NATO Ribbon. SGM Schade also earned the Parachutist's Badge, the Air Assault Badge, the Combat Action Badge, the Drill Sergeant Badge, the Expert Marksman's Badge (rifle and pistol) and the Superior Unit Ribbon.

Sergeant Major Schade's military education included the primary, basic and advanced noncommissioned officer's courses, the battle staff course and the U.S. Army Sergeant Major Academy (Class 58). Scott also attended Airborne School, Air Assault School, the Rappel Master Course, the Combat Lifesaver Course, Drill Sergeant School, Master of Fitness Trainer Course, M109A6 Paladin Course, Equal Opportunity Leader Course, and the Nuclear Biological Chemical Officer Course. Scott also completed two years of college.

Scott is survived by his wife, Jackie; his son, Zack; his stepdaughters Danita, Damika, Victoria and Lesteria; his brother, Gary and his wife, Lisa, as well as their daughters Heather, Amber and Anna; his father, Donald; and his grandparents, Harry and Gene.

There is a memorial fund for the education of Zacharian.

Visitations will be held for Scott at Rembs Funeral Home on Friday, March 6, from 4 p.m. to 7 p.m. and again Saturday from 10 a.m. until time of the service.

Funeral services will be held at Rembs Funeral Home at 300 South Oak Ave. in Marshfield on Saturday, March 7 at 11 a.m.

Burial will be in the West Spencer Cemetery in the town of Sherman, Clark County.
