Scharf, Mrs. Mamie (Gardner) (Retirement - 1971)
Mrs. Mamie (Gardner) Scharf, a Granton teacher, will be honored at an Open
House on May 2, from 2 to 4 p.m. in the school cafeteria at Granton. All former
pupils, friends and relatives are invited.
Mrs. Scharf will retire, at
the close of the current school year, after 43 years of teaching, all of which
have been in the Granton area, with the exception of one year.
Mrs.
Scharf graduated from Granton High School with the class of 1927, attended the
Neillsville Teacher Training School for a year and began her teaching career at
the Heathville School, in the town of Fremont, in September 1928. The following
12 years were spent in Fremont Township - six years at the Cozy Corner School
and six years at the Pine Circle School. She then spent five years at Oriole
Hill School and eight years at Merryvale School, both in the Town of York. Mrs.
Scharf taught for the next four years at the Poplar Grove School in Lynn, and
one year at Breezy Hill School in the Town of Worden, before joining the Granton
Public School system in 1959.
She earned a Bachelor Degree in elementary
education from Wisconsin State University-Stevens Point by attending summer
sessions and night school classes.
Many of her students are children of
former students; and in one instance she is now teaching a third generation -
William Genteman, father of Mrs. Francis Langreck and grandfather of all five of
the Langreck children now attending the Granton School.
Mrs. Scharf and
her husband, Harold, live on a farm on Rt. 1 Granton. Their plans include
traveling and fishing.
