Korean Casualty
Husband of Abbotsford Woman
Mrs. Orle S. Bergner received a telegram
Saturday from the Department of Defense, stating that her husband, Second Lt.
Bergner, was killed in action in Korea October 22. Mrs. Bergner, the former
Carol Hanson, is the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. William Hanson.
The death
of Lt. Bergner occurred 11 days after entering actual combat n Korea. He has
served during all of World War II without a scratch.
Lt. Bergner was a
Marine Corps veteran. He enlisted in that branch of service, in 1933, following
his graduation from the Gillett High School in 1933 as class valedictorian. He
served in China from 1935 to 1938 and then went into the inactive reserve from
1938 to 1941.
During the time he was a member of the inactive reserve,
he made his home with his sister, Mrs. W. E. Moore, Wausau. He was employed by
the county highway department and the Lotz Sand and Gravel Co. while a resident
of Wausau.
Called back to active service in February 1941, he served in
the Pacific Theatre during the entire World War II. He took part in the initial
invasion of Guadalcanal and was awarded the Silver Starr medal for his part in
the invasion. He later was in the assault group participating in the capture of
Tarawa.
The telegram from the defense department indicated that
temporary burial took place near the scene of the action.

of Company B, 1st Battalion, 7th Marines, 1st Marine Division. He was killed in
Action while fighting the enemy in Korea on October 22, 1951. Second Lieutenant
Bergner was awarded the Purple Heart, the Combat Action Ribbon, the Korean
Service Medal, the United Nations Service Medal, the National Defense Service
Medal, the Korean Presidential Unit Citation and the Republic of Korea War
Service Medal.
