Busch, Edith #2 (1918 - 21 MAY 1949)
Mrs. Edith Busch, aged 31, who last year was employed as Home Economics instructor in the Withee (Clark Co., Wis.) school system, lost her life Saturday night when the car in which she was riding with her husband, was struck by a Soo Line passenger train in the village of Spencer at 10:55 p.m.
Edith Busch died instantly from injuries, including a broken neck and skull fracture. Her husband, Delbert, 32, driver of the car, is reported in good condition at St. Joseph’s Hospital. He suffered a concussion, facial lacerations and bruises.
Soo building and bridge maintenance cars were parked on a siding on the north side of the highway which may have blocked the vision of the driver, authorities reported. For the past few days, railroad crews have been in the process of installing warning signals at the crossing.
The train was proceeding south from the Twin Cities. The cow catcher caught the car on the right side just rear of the center and carried it about 50 feet from the north to the south side of the highway.
Mrs. Busch was thrown about 10 feet west of the car which finally came to rest facing north. Much of the rear of the car was scattered fro about three blocks along the right of way. The body of the two door sedan was completely ripped away and the rear set was thrown about 100 feet away.
The train was operated by Engineer Frank Kinker, Fond du Lac, and Conductor Adolph Oligney, Stevens Point. Mrs. Busch was a home economics teacher in the Greenwood High School system. Following her graduation from Central State Teachers College at Stevens Point, she taught in high schools at Wrightstown, Edgar, and Withee before coming to Greenwood. Her husband is the Greenwood water superintendent and a member of the city police force.
Other survivors include a son, Bruce, 3, at home; two sisters, Mrs. Ed (Elizabeth) Grimm, Mt. Prospect, Ill., and Mrs. Harold (Margaret) Dillenbeck, Greenwood. Her parents, Mr. and Mrs. George Einfeldt, Greenwood, also survive.
Funeral services were conducted at Greenwood Tuesday afternoon.
