Married Tuesday evening at Bethany Lutheran Church, Owen, were Miss Martha Makkonen and the Rev. Leslie Gerald Lurvey. The bride is the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Oscar Makkonen, Withee (Clark Co., Wis.), and the groom’s mother is Mrs. Jacob Lurvey, Fairport Harbor, Ohio.
Officiating at the 8 o’clock service was the Rev. Walter Kukkonen, Superior.
When they return from a two week honeymoon at a lake in northern Minnesota, the newlyweds will reside at 403 Chapman St., Ely, Minn. In August they plan a trip to Ohio and New York.
The bride attended River Falls State Teachers College and Wheaton College, Wheaton, Ill., and has taught school in Wisconsin. She is a graduate of Owen High School. The Rev. Mr. Lurvey is a graduate of Fairport Harbor High School, Ohio State University, and theological seminary at Suomi College, Hancock, Mich. He is pastor of Our Savior’s Lutheran Church, Ely, Minn.
Bridal aides were Miss Sarah Makkonen, Withee, sister of the bride, as maid of honor, and Miss Ruth Makkonen, Minneapolis, another sister of the bride, as bridesmaid.
Best man was the Rev. Viljo Puotinen, Owen, and the groom’s other attendant was Ray Jylanki, Painesville, Ohio, brother-in-law of the groom. Ushers were Reino Makkonen, brother of the bride, and Ray Hendrickson, Fairport Harbor, brother-in-law of the groom.
White satin, featuring a beaded lace yoke and hoop skirt ending in a long train, formed the bride’s gown. The fingertip veil was caught to a beaded tiara and she carried a crescent bouquet of white roses and stephanotis.
Light blue organdy over taffeta, matching gauntlets, and net hats were worn by the bridal aides. They carried cresecnet bouquets of white and yellow gladioli respectively.
Among the out of town guests at the wedding were Mrs. Jacob Lurvey and ? Gustafson, Ely, Minn.; Mrs. Ray Hendrickson and son, Arthur, Fairport Harbor, Ohio; Mrs. Ray Jylanki, Painesville, Ohio; the Rev. Robert Hetico, Miss Rachel Pentlmaki, Miss Lina Makkonen and Miss Florence Hautamaki, Chicago; Mr. and Mrs. Ralph Hutchinson and Mr. and Mrs. Reinhold Backhaus, Herices, and Miss Verna Forman, Neillsville.
