Camp Fire Girls Urge Everyone To Learn Carols

Organization Sponsors Campaign to Familiarize All With Yuletide Songs.

"Learn a Carol a Day," is the slogan of the campaign sponsored by the Camp Fire Girls of Oshkosh, who are trying to familiarize themselves and the community with the cheer and charm expressed by the old Christmas carols. Beginning with this issue, and continuing through the issue of Dec. 22 the words and history of one Christmas carol will be published in The Daily Northwestern each day.

These will include carols of two types—convivial and sacred. Those to be published are "Come. All Ye Faithful," "Silent Night." "Hark, the HeraJd Angels Sing," Little town of Bethlehem," "Deck the Hall," "It Came Upon the Midnight Clear," "Good King Wenceslas,' and "The First Noel." Churches, theaters, and all civic groups have been asked to join in the movement.

The climax of the "Learn a Carol a Day" campaign will be the evening of Dec. 23, when hundreds of Camp Fire Girls, trained by Mrs. Harriett Pfefferkorn will sing these carols all through the city. They will visit the hospitals and shut-ins as usual.

A new feature has been added this year, of singing at any window where they are invited. The official invitation is a light in the window. Anyone who would, like to Have a gay caroling group stop at his window is asked to put a light in the window, and the girls, dressed in red, carrying lights, will stop and sing the carols of the Christmastide.

The first song to be learned in the "Learn a Carol a Day" campaign is "O, Come, All Ye Faithfull," the -words of which are given herewith: "O come, all ye faithful, joyful and triumphant,

" O come ye, O come ye, to Bethlehem.

'Come and behold him, born the king of angels;

(After each verse)

'Come let us adore him.

'O come let us adore him,

'O come, let us adore him. Christ the lord."

Sing, choirs of angles, sing in exultation,

Sing all ye citizens of heav'n above;

Glory to God in the highest:

Yea, lord we greet thee, born this happy morning; 'Jesus, to thee be glory giv'n; word of the Father, now in flesh appearing.

**********

It is not surprising that this sturdy, whole-hearted tune, was the favorite hymn ot that full-blooded American, Theodore Roosevelt. His preference has been shared by hundreds of thousands of men, women and children throughout the world The original words, beginning Adeste Fideles, are still frequently used.

"The source of the music is not definitely known, but whether this joyful manly hymn is the work of this or that man, or like a folk song, the combined product of several men, it is one of the hymns of tne ages which apparently is to live for centuries. It keeps alive the spirit and expression which stirred many happy folks who have gone before, and countless numbers which follow after.
