Smart, Donald W. (22 July 1910 - 3 Sept. 1962)

Donald W. Smart died Monday, Sept. 3, at 11:15 A.M. at the age of 52 years. Mr. Smart took his life by asphyxiating himself with monoxide gas, according to a report by Herbert C. Lambert, Marathon county coroner, who investigated.

Funeral services will be held at the Methodist church in Colby, Thursday, Sept. 6, 1962, Rev. Ralph Koelemay officiating, and internment will be made in the Colby Memorial cemetery (Colby, Wisconsin).

Mr. Smart was born in the town of Hull on July 22, 1910, and received his education in rural and Colby schools. He married Florence Bennett in Unity on April 12, 1937, and after their marriage, took over the home farm. He spent his entire life on the farm in the town of Hull.

Surviving are his wife; one son, Donald Smart of Colby; one daughter, Diane Smart, at home; one grand daughter; two brothers, Ben Smart of Milwaukee and Charles Smart of Wausau; three sisters, Mrs. Walter (Edith) Wurthman of Wausau, Mrs. Mike (Evelyn) Nehring of Rothschild, Mrs. William (Ruth) Loughead of Abbotsford, Wis.

One sister, Mrs. Albert (Imogene) Maxey, preceded him in death.

Funeral services for Donald W. Smart, age 52, were held Thursday, Sept. 6, at 2:00 o’clock in the Methodist church in Colby, Wis., Rev. Ralph Koelemay officiating, and internment was made in the Colby Memorial cemetery (Colby, Wisconsin). Miss Mary Vorland sang "The Old Rugged Cross" and "My Faith Lifts Up to Me," accompanied by Mrs. John Cross at the organ.

Pall bearers were nephews - Brice Bender, John Brill, Edward Brill, Anthony Beck, Ray Berg and Frank Valek.

Out of town people here for the funeral were Ben Smart of Milwaukee, Darrell Maxey of Port Washington, Mr. and Mrs. Grant Smart, Mr. and Mrs. Walter Wurthman, Mr. and Mrs. Nat Zarnke, Mrs. Bell Mardus, George Smart, Mr. and Mrs. Mike Nedring, all of Wausau, Mr. and Mrs. Floyd Wermberg of Arpin, Miss Elizabeth Hannawalt of Marshfield, Mr. and Mrs. Merton Reckner of Spencer, Mr. and Mrs. Frank Bayuk of Greenwood, Mr. and Mrs. Robert Pocock of Ogema, Mrs. Ralph Bennett of Fond du Lac, Mr. and Mrs. Fred Brandt of Withee, Charles Smart, Mrs. Henry Gums and Mrs. Palmer Gums of Wausau, Billy Loughead of Kenosha, Mr. and Mrs. Albert Jeske of Owen, Max Streenck of Whitewater, Elmer Vieguts of Edgar, Mr. and Mrs. Oscar Rodman of Athens, Mr. and Mrs. Walter Schillinger of Edgar, Mr. and Mrs. Fred Kiebke of Greenwood, Mr. and Mrs. Leonard Bauman of Fenwood, Mr. and Mrs. Jim Russell of Medford, Mr. and Mrs. Joe Smart of Butternut, Marcon and Elaine Smart of Butternut and friends and relatives near by.
