Smith, John Elander (6 May 1861 - 8 Nov. 1942)
Funeral services for John Elander Smith, 81, who died Sunday night at Chicago, were held this afternoon at 1:30 at the home of his daughter, Mrs. J. A. Rilling. The Rev. George E. Griffiths officiated at the rites which were followed by internment in the Abbotsford cemetery.
Pall bearers were Dr. J. A. Rilling, M. C. Thompson, George and Elmer Greaser.
Mrs. C. W. Hoffman, Mrs. Walter Fults and Mrs. L. K. Neitzel took charge of the floral tributes.
John Elander Smith was born in Syracuse, N.Y., May 6, 1861. His marriage to Miss Lena Caroline Berger took place at Cincinnati, Ohio, in October, 1885.
About four years ago Mr. Smith suffered a stroke and had been in failing health since that time. Prior to that time, although having lived in Chicago since early manhood, he had visited here on several occasions, the last time was about five years ago.
He is survived by his widow and an only child, Mrs. Mae Rilling. There are also two grand daughters, Miss Winnifred Rilling, Wausau, and Miss Althea Rilling, Abbotsford, Wis.
