Mateofsky, Frances Hameta (9 Mar. 1864 - 2 June 1944)

Funeral services for Mrs. John Mateofsky, 80, who died Friday morning, June 2, were held, Monday morning at 9:30 at St. Bernard’s Catholic church. The Rev. Francis Brockman officiated at the requiem high mass and internment was made in the Abbotsford cemetery.

The pallbearers were William Bogaard, Fred Dietsche, John Kiefer, Henry Parge, John Shefsick and Vernon Steffen.

Frances Hameta Mateofsky was born March 9, 1864, in Austria. At the age of 22 she came to America with three of her sisters and lived at Ashland where on July 4, 1884, she was married to John Mateofsky. The young couple lived in Ashland for 11 years and then moved to a farm near Dorchester for a period of five years and also spent one year in Milwaukee, Wisconsin. They then moved to a farm one mile north and two and one-half miles east of Abbotsford where they lived for 22 years.

After their retirement, they moved to the village and five months later Mr. Mateofsky died. Although in poor health for the past 10 years, Mrs. Mateofsky kept her own home until about five years ago when she spent the time with her three children. While she was at the home of her son, John, at Medford, she suffered a stroke and was taken to the Medford Clinic where she died Friday morning at 1:15 a.m., after a week’s illness.

She is survived by her two daughters, Mrs. Fred Toelle, Abbotsford, and Mrs. Joe Schefsick, Chippewa Falls; and one son, John, of Medford, and five grand children. She was preceded in death by her husband, two daughters and a son, two brothers and six sisters.

The St. Bernard’s Altar Society, of which the deceased was a member, met Sunday evening, at the Zink Funeral Home, where the body lay in state, for a rosary service.

Relatives and friends from away who attended the funeral were: Mr. and Mrs. Joe Schefsick and family, Chippewa Falls; Mr. and Mrs. John Mateofsky and daughter, and Mr. and Mrs. Peter Janda, Medford; Frank Mateofsky, Ashland; Frank Stauber, Milwaukee; Anton Mateofsky, Felix Bohman and Art Nowalk, Stratford; Mr. and Mrs. Ernest Abeggien and Mrs. Paul Koch, Stetsonville, and Mr. and Mrs. Peter Beyerl and son, Peter, Colby, Wis.
