Grether, David Rev. (15 July 1889 - 21 May 1945)
Funeral services for the Rev. David Grether, pastor of the First Evangelical and Reformed church of Colby, Wisconsin, who died unexpectedly Monday, will be held Friday afternoon at 1:00 o’clock at his parish church with the Rev. Elmer Jaberg, Sheboygan, the president of the Northern Wisconsin Synod, and the Rev. Edwin Worthman, Kiel, officiating. Burial will take place at Black River Falls.
Rev. Grether had conducted his regular church duties Sunday. He was stricken with a heart attack and died at his home at 5:30 Monday morning.
The Rev. Mr. Grether was born in Poland, Indiana, July 15, 1889, and received his education at Mission House College, Plymouth, graduating from there in 1915. On Aug. 30 the following year he was married at Black River Falls to Anna Marie Stucki.
After his graduation he served at Neillsville for nine years, then spent 17 years at Magley, Indiana, before coming to Colby in the fall of 1942 to assume the pastorship of the Evangelical and Reformed church.
Surviving besides his widow are five children, the Rev. William J. Grether, Delmont, S. D.; Lt. (jg) David Frank Grether with the U.S. navy in the Pacific; Mrs. Calvin (Marie) Stuebbe, Schaller, Iowa; Mrs. Albert (Ruth) Gress, Dayton, Ohio; and Miss Grace Grether, Milwaukee, Wisconsin.
Also surviving are his mother, Mrs. William Grether, Loveland, Colo.; four sisters, Miss Helen Grether, Berkely, Calif.; Miss Joan Grether, Loveland, Colo.; Miss Eulalia Grether, a returned missionary from Egypt, now of California; and Mrs. Doris Woelfle, Loveland, Colo.; and two brothers, Mark Grether, Fort Collins, Colo., and Ewald Grether, Berkley, Calif.
