Lainio, Arthur (JUL 1881 - 4 SEP 1950)

Clark County officials have determined that the death of Arthur Lainio, 69, who was found dead in his home last Thursday night by neighbors, was of natural causes. The investigation revealed that Lainio had suffered a heart attack while leaving his home and fell face downward on the concrete steps later Sunday evening. His wife, Mary, dragged him into the house and tucked a pillow under his head and covered him with a blanket. He died sometime that night. She failed to notify anyone and it was not until Thursday evening when Frank McKern visited the home that he suspicioned that something was wrong.

McKern, who always took Lainio to town with him to do his shopping, thought it funny he hadn’t seen him and knew he would be needing to do some buying soon, so he visited the home. Mrs. Lainio was milking when he arrived and told him her husband was in the house sleeping and that she wanted him to do so. McKern left the farm home, located northeast of Withee (Clark Co., Wis.), but went to the home of Abel Nevela who talks fluent Finnish and took him to the Lainio home with him. Nevela walked past Mrs. Lainio into the house and found the deceased on the floor. McKern went to the home of Emil Niemi, who then alerted Wm. Nelson of the county traffic department and he in turn notified the other local and county authorities who worked on the case.

Chief of police Adolph Haavisto did the interpreting between county officials and Mrs. Lainio during the questioning.

Funeral services were conducted at 1:30 Saturday afternoon from the Griebenow Funeral Home (Owen, Wisconsin). Rev. Puotinen officiated at the service and burial was made in the Riverside Cemetery.

Pallbearers were Ed Nevala, Art Laine, Henry Cass, John Silkarala, Otto Santala and Herman Ranta.

He is survived by his wife and one brother, Emil.

The couple were early residents of Owen and at one time operated a pop factory here until 1928, at which time they sold the property and moved onto their farm in the Town of Hixon.

Mrs. Lainio is now being cared for at the Clark County Hospital.
