Joseph Bernard McCabe was born May 16, 1860 in Neenah. In 1883 he was united in marriage to Mary Louise Lueth.

For a number of years Mr. McCabe was employed as a corporate foreman at the Menasha Woodenware. At the age of 27 he went to Chicago and began his railroading career at which he remained until his retirement on May 31, 1925. He worked as a fireman until about 1900 when he became an engineer.

In 1887 he was transferred from Chicago to the Ashland division of the Wisconsin Central. In 1891 the McCabe family moved to Abbotsford where Mr. and Mrs. McCabe were both very active in church work. They with a group of other families, helped to organize St. Bernard’s parish, so named in memory of a deceased son of Mr. and Mrs. McCabe, with Father Reding as pastor. Mr. McCabe served as a director of the church until about 10 years ago.

After his retirement from the railroad, Mr. McCabe lived quietly in Abbotsford, Wis. He had been in ill health the past year and seriously ill since Feb. 11 when he was admitted to St. Joseph’s hosptial, Marshfield, where he died Tuesday night at 9:20.

The body is lying in state at the Zink Funeral Home where a rosary service will be held tonight at 8:00 o’clock.

He is survived by four children: Mrs. Charlotte Enman, Pardeeville; Felix W. McCabe, Seattle, Wash.; Raphaella, Abbotsford; and Robert E. McCabe, of St. Paul. There are seven grand children and six great grand children.

Two sisters, Mrs. Mel Crowley, Antigo; and Mrs. Anton Thompson, Manitowoc; and one brother, Henry James McCabe, Milwaukee, also survive.

He was preceded in death by Mrs. McCabe, who died May 17, 1939, and an 11-year-old son, Bernard.

At the time of his death, Mr. McCabe was a member of St. Bernard’s Catholic church, the Holy Name Society and the Brotherhood of Locomotive Engineers.
