Filipiak, Mary A. (Berger) (19 MAR 1922 -
13 NOV 2013)
Mary A. Filipiak, 91, Medford, died while surrounded by her
family on Wednesday, Nov. 13 at Care Partners Assisted Living in Medford, where
she had resided the past 3-1/2 months, most recently under hospice care.
Funeral services were held on Saturday, Nov. 16 at Hemer Funeral Home in
Medford, with Father Gerard Willger officiating. Interment was at Holy Rosary
Catholic Cemetery in Medford. Dave Nowacki was active pallbearer. Jim Oldenberg
was honorary pallbearer.
The former Mary Berger was born on March 19,
1922 in Superior to the late August Joseph and Mathilda Emma (Zimmerman) Berger.
She attended Flat Meadow Grade School, graduated from Medford High School and
attended Taylor County Normal School in Medford and the University of
Wisconsin-Stevens Point where she earned a teaching degree.
On September
1, 1956 at Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Stetsonville, she married Steven J.
Filipiak, who preceded her in death in September 1978. She taught at local
schools, then middle school in Pewaukee. She then was a secretary at Babcock and
Wilcox Company in Milwaukee until her retirement in 1987. In 2008 she moved to
Medford to be closer to family and friends.
She was a member of St.
Augustine Catholic Church in Milwaukee. She enjoyed traveling, gardening,
quilting and reading.
She is survived by a sister, Estelle Oldenberg of
Medford, a brother, Jim Berger of Medford, nieces and nephews, and other
relatives and friends.
In addition to her parents and husband, she was
preceded in death by a brother, Norman Berger and a sister, Alice Hoffmann.
In lieu of flowers, memorials can be given to the family for future
designation.
