Cornwell, Orville #2 (20 DEC 1831 - 5 SEP 1907)
Last Thursday Orville Cornwell, one of Clark County’s earliest settlers and progressive citizens passed to his greater reward at his home in the town of Pine Valley, southwest of this city. For many years Mr. Cornwell had been prominent in town and local affairs, and stood ready at all times to lend his aid to a project which would be of benefit tot eh community and his fellow man, or uplift the moral standard of his associates. A grand, good man himself, it was his earnest endeavor to uplift the life and thought of those about him. He was progressive beyond his time and a strong advocate of temperance. Mr. Cornwell was supervisor of the town of Pine Valley for several terms. His influence will be greatly missed in his community.
Orville Cornwell was born Dec. 20, 1831 at Theresa, Jefferson Co., N.Y., and on Dec. 23, 1852, was united in marriage to Ann Elizabeth Palmer at Lewis Co., N.Y. In 1866 they came to Neillsville and in 1867 settled upon the farm which has since been their home. Four children were born to them: Emmaline, now Mrs. E. J. Spooner of Lents, Ore., Adelbert of Livingston, Mont., Alice, now Mrs. H. F. Ferguson of Minneapolis, and Leland of Neillsville. The funeral was held Sunday, the Odd Fellows, of which Mr. Cornwell had been a member since youth, holding services at the grave. Among those who attended the funeral were Mr. Cornwell’s brother, Oscar, and wife of Thorp, Mrs. Carl Ogden of La Crosse and Mr. and Mrs. H. F. Ferguson and son, Bernard of Minneapolis.
