A. Dixon of the town of Sherwood (Clark Co., Wis.) brought a sample of his tobacco plants into the Times office last week. The seedling is 7 foot 3 inches high from where it was cut off close to the ground. Mr. Dixon had three acres of tobacco this year and he cut it a week ago Saturday, and it is now drying in the sheds. The plants were set out on July 2nd, which shows a phenomenally quick development, Mr. Dixon says, that makes Clark County tobacco superior to that raised father south. Mr. Dixon has been a raiser and buyer of tobacco for 20 years, and he is enthusiastic over the prospects of Clark County adding tobacco to her long list of crops.

Mr. Dixon is interesting some of his neighbors in tobacco and has assured them he will buy all they can raise, as he is acting for a large firm of buyers by whom he was at one time employed. Mr. Dixon claims that Clark County tobacco is but slightly inferior to that raised in Connecticut, as it has a fine vein and is smooth and easily handled. He raised a ton of tobacco to the acre, which he says excels any crop he had ever had before, and consequently will have three tons on tobacco to market this year. The growers receive about 15 or 16 cents per pound, and if Mr. Dixon gets 15 cents his three acres of tobacco will average him $300 per acre. That the crop is a valuable one is instanced by the great demand and abnormal values of land upon which it can be grown. If Clark County land is as well adapted to the growth of tobacco as Mr. Dixon believes it is, it might be well for a few farmers to talk with him and plant a few acres next years.
