Hughes, William #2 (24 SEP 1836 - 29 NOV 1908)
Last Sunday death visited a happy home on Pleasant Ridge (Clark Co., Wis.) and brought peace and surcease of mortal pain to William Hughes. In this death Clark County loses another of its pioneers, one who was known for his kindly disposition, optimistic views and pleasant and sunny nature. Mr. Hughes was born at Frampton, in the province of Quebec, Canada, on Sept. 24th, 1836. About the year 1870, Mr. Hughes decided to settle in Clark County and with all his energy and courage, he laid the foundation of a prosperous life and a happy home that was to continue long after he had ceased to toil and labor. In August 1872, he was united in marriage to Mrs. Milton Cook, and to this union eight children were born: Mrs. Louis Hantke of this city, James E., Michael L. and Archie, who reside at home, Wm. F. of Redfield, S.D., Dan P., who attends the Stevens Point Normal, John L., who attends the state university at Madison, Margaret, assistant principal of the Granton schools. One stepson, Samuel J. Cook, also survives to comfort the bereaved wife and mother. Four brothers also survive Mr. Hughes, John and Michael of Pleasant Ridge, Pat of Greenwood, and Edward of Tucson, Ariz., and one sister, Mrs. Ephraim Lezotte of Waupaca.
"Billy" Hughes, as he was known to all his friends, was a man of truest integrity and sincere friendship. He was genial and pleasant, upright in his business dealings, and his keen sense of humor made his life a happy and contented one. His death bed, surrounded by his wife and all his children, was peaceful and contented and characteristics of the life he lived.
The funeral was held Tuesday morning in this city at St. Mary’s Church, interment being made in the Catholic Cemetery.
