Berrett, Duane #2 (25 DEC 1932 - 5 JUL 1952)

Duane Berrett, 19, son of Mr. and Mrs. Verland Berrett, Greenwood (Clark Co., Wis.), drowned in 15 feet of water at Rock Dam, 12 miles south of Thorp, at 3:45 p.m. Saturday.

Berrett had waded out 30 feet into the dam reservoir to return a boat that had gotten loose and was drifting away. A non-swimmer, he was unable to get to the boat and was returning to shore to get his father when he stepped into a drop off.

His father rushed into the water and grasped his son, according to a witness, but both went down. By the time help arrived the boy had drowned. His father was taken from the water unconscious. He is under a doctor’s care at his home.

The boy’s body was recovered a short time later from 15 feet of water by Ronald Obernberger, Racine, who had been swimming at the dam. Artificial respiration failed to revive the youth.

Funeral services for young Berret was held at 2 p.m. Wednesday at the Grace Methodist Church in Greenwood. The Rev. Lee Holmes officiated and burial was made at the Greenwood Cemetery.

Berrett was born in Neillsville Dec. 25, 1932. He was a graduate of Greenwood High School and had been working in Milwaukee for a year prior to his death.

Besides his parents he leaves a sister, Jean (Mrs. Robert Worden), and a brother James of Greenwood.
