Alvina A. (Wadinski) Szymanski, 96, village of Marathon, died November 29, 2013, at Aspirus Wausau Hospital.

The funeral Mass will be celebrated 11:30 a.m. Wednesday, December 4, 2013, at St. Mary Catholic Church, Marathon. Rev. Msgr. Joseph Diermeier will preside.

Burial will be in the parish cemetery. Friends may call Tuesday from 4:00 p.m. until 8:00 p.m. at Peterson/Kraemer Funeral Home, Marathon, and again on Wednesday from 10:00 a.m. until the time of services at the church. There will be a parish rosary at 7:00 p.m. Tuesday evening followed by a 7:30 p.m. American Legion Auxiliary service at the Marathon funeral home.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be directed to St. Mary Parish, Marathon.

Alvina A. (Wadinski) Szymanski, age 96, village of Marathon, died November 29, 2013 at Aspirus Wausau Hospital.

She was born August 29, 1917 the daughter of the late Leo and Clara (Pospyhalla) Wadinski. On June 12, 1943 she married Joseph W. Szymanski, who died November 9, 1998.

She was an active member of St. Mary' Congregation, served as President of Parish Council of Catholic Women and helped organize St. Mary's Blood Bank which she was also Chairman of from 1964 to 1993.

Alvina was a charter member of the American Legion Auxiliary Unit 469 of Marathon serving as President of the Unit and County President of the Auxiliary and District Treasurer. She was General Chairman of the Auxiliary Fun Days Committee for 25 years.

She served on the Village election board for 25 years and was a volunteer for the Nutrition Site delivering meals. Alvina served on various volunteer drives such as Red Cross, Polio, Poppy Sales and many others. She was a member of NARFE Chapter 689 of Wausau and the AARP.

In 1998 Alvina and Joe were recognized as "Persons of the Year" by the Marathon Business Association.

Her hobbies included sewing, gardening, golfing, card playing and bowling, having recently been inducted into the Wausau Bowlers Hall of Fame. Also traveling, having covered all 50 states, Canada, Mexico and the Caribbean Islands.

Survivors include three sisters, Mrs. Lucille Royston, Mazomanie, Mrs. Virginia Paszek, West Allis, and Mrs. Angeline Kryshak, Tomahawk; brothers-in-law, Philip Ritger, Frank (Alvina) Szymanski and Wally (Bernice) Szymanski, and many nieces and nephews.

Besides her parents and husband, Joseph, she was preceded in death by sisters, Emily Murkowski, Dolores Marzynski and Leona Ritger.
