Schield, Carroll N., Dr. (21 NOV 1947 - 22 NOV 2013)

Dr. Carroll N. Schield, formerly of Neillsville, WI, passed away at the age of 96 on Friday, November 22 at Agrace Hospice in Fitchburg, WI.

Carroll was born Nov. 21, 1917 in Neillsville, WI. as the only child of Joseph and Alice Schield. After graduating from Neillsville High School in 1936, he attended college at Drake University in Des Moines, IA, on a basketball scholarship. After one year at Drake, he elected to attend dental school at Marquette University in Milwaukee, WI, where he met, and eventually married, his wife of 67 years, Elizabeth (Betty) Schield. Upon graduation from Marquette's dental program, Carroll served in the U.S. Army as a Medical Officer in both Europe and the Philippines from 1941-1945. Following his honorable discharge, he and Betty returned to Neillsville, where he practiced dentistry from 1946 to 1984 and they raised a family of seven children. After retirement, Carroll and Betty moved to Florida, returning each summer to the family's cottage in Hatfield, WI.

A private and quiet man, Carroll was a dedicated professional, a well-regarded community member, and a cherished husband, father, grandfather, and great-grandfather. Always active, he was an avid tennis player and played the game well into his late 80's. He was a lifelong Packer fan, a baseball enthusiast and enjoyed time with his family. As a testament to his professional achievements, Carroll held life memberships in the American Dental Association, Wisconsin Dental Association, and Central Wisconsin Dental Society. He belonged to St. Mary's Catholic Church in Neillsville, Wisconsin and St. James' Catholic Church in New Port Richey, Florida.

Carroll was preceded in death by his wife Betty, in 2011, and is survived by his seven children, Patricia (Jay) Werth of Santa Rosa, CA, Dr. Dan (Roberta) Schield of Neillsville, WI, Wendy Smail of Boulder, CO, Joseph Schield of Port Richey, FL, Mary Alice Schield of Sonoma, CA, Jim (Shawn) Schield of Arlington, VA, and David (Rebecca) Schield of Middleton, WI; 12 grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren.

A memorial service will be held at St. Mary's Church in Neillsville, WI, on Friday, January 24, 2014, with visitation beginning at 10:00 am, followed by a funeral Mass at 11:00 am.
