A class of 40 seniors in their gray caps and gowns, and wearing their class flower, the white rose, received their diplomas at commencement exercises attended by a capacity crowd of relatives and friends, Wednesday night at the high school auditorium.
Joe Mitchell Chapple, age 81, of Boston and Miami, gave the commencement address. Mr. Chapple, who founded the Ashland Daily Press, 60 years ago, is on a Centennial visit to Ashland. He is giving 15 commencement addresses in Wisconsin and chose Abbotsford because Mr. Abbott, for whom the village was named, was a personal friend of Mr. Chapple.
Mr. Chapple spoke to the graduates as well as those attending, on the importance of honor in their dealings with others. In his talk he listed seven C’s which he considered important as they sailed the sea of life. They are courtesy, calculation, concentration, courage, compassion, cheerfulness, and character. From his long career as cub reporter and newspaper correspondent, he told how these characteristics were dominant in the great men he had known. Mr. Chapple has interviewed over 6,500 celebrities and had many intimate recollections dating to his first meeting with President McKinley.
Mr. Chapple will give the commencement address at Glidden, Thursday.
