Stieber, Roman J. (1 May 1896 - 12 Nov. 1949)
Services for Roman J. Stieber, 53, were held at 9:00 Tuesday morning at St. Mary’s Catholic church, at Colby, Wis. He was killed Saturday morning when his truck was rammed by a Soo Line freight train a block south of the depot.
Burial was made in the Colby (Colby, Clark Co. Wis.) Cemetery, the Rev. N. B. Beschta officiating.
Mr. Stieber was born May 1, 1896, at Marathon City. A veteran of World War I, he was married to Emma Gassner at Marathon City April 29, 1918.
They operated a tavern there for two years and he then ran a blacksmith business for the next nine years. They moved to Colby in February, 1929, when he purchased a hardware store. He also owned Stieber’s Lockers.
Mr. Stieber had recently sold his hardware store to D. C. Gregory, of Brookfield, Ill., who was to take possession Jan. 1.
Mr. Stieber was prominent in civic affairs and at the time of his death was alderman of the Second ward. He was a member of the Holy Name Society of St. Mary’s church.
He is survived by his wife and four children, Michael, Joe and David, Colby; and Mrs. Joe Pech, Unity, Wis. Three brothers, Rudolph, Marathon; and Alfred and Fred, Wausau; and six sisters, Mrs. Louis Lyons, Wausau; Mrs. Joseph Schuster, Mrs. Felix Bahm, Mrs. Lena Smith, and Mrs. Edward Becker, Milwaukee; and Mrs. Conrad Kleinschmidt, Merrill, survive.
An inquest into the death is being held this afternoon at Colby, Wis. Members of the cornoner’s jury are Vern Steffen, Vern Marcott, Don Armstrong, Bill Kozlowski, John Bremer, Jr., and Lowell Dorn, all residents of Abbotsford, Wis.
